Anyone planning a Steam OS Build?

Anyone else planning something special for SteamOS?

Came across this BitFenix gem on the Ocaholic forums by user "LucaRocchi," thought you all might like it, looks fantastic, and the specs are definitely good enough to be using it for more than just streaming. At least, when more games become SteamOS compatible. Anyone else planning something special for SteamOS?

Running "Alchemist" Steam OS 1.0, based on "Wheezy" Debian Stable 7.1 distribution.

Personally I'm thinking about doing my own build too. My living room is way far from the PC, and my net is up to par, so I think a budget streaming machine could work really well.

At the moment steam OS only really makes sense with Nvidia based systems (CPU doesn't matter)from what I've read due to Nvidia being better with Linux (drivers are actually decent etc). I'm building a steambox currently :D. Its alot lower spec than the one above however. It has a gt640 and a athlon x4. I'm still messing around with it (motherboard is currently RMA'd) so I haven't had a chance to try steam OS out on it/get a graphics card that isn't poo.

Good to know! Shame that my old 6870 won't be too impressive in anything I make then.

You gonna use it for streaming mostly then, and just running basic, less intensive games?

Its actually a build I'll be selling to a friend when it gets a new gpu as I now have much more portable main PC. I'm planning to use my media server (currently dead)to do the streaming to my TV.

The issue with AMD gpus and Steam OS is that AMD gpus have very bad drivers for linux imo.

The closest thing I have to a SteamBox is my secondary rig. It's not running SteamOS, but rather what Steam OS is based off - Debian 7.1 (Wheezy). I consider it a SteamBox as a result. :p

Historically, if you wanted good GPU drivers in Linux you'd always have to go to Nvidia. They basically give you their Windows driver in Linux, so performance is more or less on par.

AMD has always been kind of flakey. Some releases of Catalyst would work well, others wouldn't. In the AMA Tom's Hardware did with AMD before Xmas, they did promise that a stable and high performance Linux driver was on the way for the very purpose of SteamOS. Us AMD fans who are also Linux users can hope! :p

Yup, got SteamOS running on a Core 2 Duo PC with 6gigs of ram and a GTX220 lol. Just to try out stuff, it works pretty well but there's not a lot of games for Linux..

Haha that's like saying I consider my Pentium 4 a 3970x because they are both based on x86

At least my statement was logical. :p

I can actually turn this into SteamOS if I want, just configure my ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh to launch Steam automatically once X and then Openbox starts.

I'd say Valve probably put a little more effort into SteamOS than that :P

Yeah, I gather they've back-ported a good load of stuff like a new kernel, and a whole boat-load new libraries to Debian Wheezy.

So yeah, not the same.
