Android smartphone?

Heya guys,

To start off I wanna say that I’m unsure if this is the correct section for this topic. If not, mods feel free to move it.

On to the topic in question... I have a question for you all Android users here, I’m a long time iPhone user and have been since the 3G era (iPhone 3G and not 3G network).

Last week, a co-worker of mine showed me his new OnePlus 7+ I believe it was, not entirely sure though. What I do remember however was that one feature he liked showing was the front, selfie camera. That when acivated, the camera actually slowly raised up on the top. And then slowly went back down when unactivated the front camera. I also remembe he mentoning the screen being 90Hz.
The reason for saying all of this, is if someone perhaps knows if this is the mentioned phone above or perhaps knows which one it is.

Anyway, it got me a bit interested and now I’m looking into an Android smartphone, only to realise there are more brands that has Android, than Apple actually has iPhones at the monent.

Plus they are also genereally a lot cheaper than an iPhone and are alot more friendly usable, such as easy USB transfer of music and new ringtones to the phone than an iPhone requiring iTunes.

My iPhone X is starting to break a bit with the charging port acting up and I just turned 26 this sunday and which growing up, comes adult life and maturity. I have lately beginning to realise that I’m less of a material guy and especially not needing the latest and greatest.

With this, I want to ask you all for suggestions/recommendations on an Android smartphone, since this is literally a jungle to me. More so than picking out parts for a PC. For me personally, a smooth menu experience, an OLED or equivelant (?) screen and wireless charging are the most essentials things for me. I rarely play games on my phone, just generally Facebook, Messenger and browsing in Firefox (due to syncing with my PC).

I use a Samsung S10 5G as my daily and it's a great phone but expensive I heard a couple peeps in recently bought section talking about how good the new xiomai if that's how it's spelt being good value to performance

I like android have used these for a fair few years now, it's a minefield to pick from but for me personally I don't buy the latest phones often buy a gen back at a cheaper price currently using a sony xa1 ultra it does what I need.

If your looking for certain features then it'll be something you need to look into to see whats out there, I'd like a one plus was going to get a oneplus 3 for an older phone it's well supported and still pretty powerful they are a good brand so the one plus 7 would be a very good phone for you, but there are many many to pick from so I'd just look into it for a few days until you see something that you like the look of.

I like the fact I've been able to use a micro sd card with my music on it over the course of several phones now makes life simple and generally there isn't anything to dislike about android it works, but some brands are better than others when it comes to OTA updates so if you want the latest with future upgrades it's something to pay attention too, that's the one thing one plus does so well they update for a long time and are built well, but which phone is right for you depends on many things, gl in your search

I'd second the OnePlus recommendation too. I'm not a serious smartphone guy, but I wanted a quality phone with no bloat, and the OnePlus 6T has been great for me. I have used the camera to take some pics at times, and it's a great camera IMO. It takes nice pics of PCs with overdone colored lighting.

You never need the latest smart phone. Staying behind the trends is a LOT cheaper.

Pixel phones are great. Pure stock Android. Basically an iPhone in terms of simplicity.

Not the most memory but honestly if you need more than 4GB of memory on a phone you should just get a small computer. Cost the same anyways with how expensive phones are.

I would recommend you Samsung Galaxy S9 or S9+. They are really cheep now. It ticks all your boxes. The baller option would be S10 variants. But i really don't see the advantage except bragging rights.

I have that phone, it is the OnePlus 7 Pro. The latest version is the OnePlus 7T Pro.
It's the fastest phone on the market thanks to the use of USF 3.0 storage and silky smooth with the 90Hz screen. I'd definitely recommend it.

This is not the best question to ask on a forum. I can guarantee you that everyone will give their own opinion.
I would agree on oneplus 7T pro up to the point you have the awful gimmicky and annoying pop up front facing camera. I have the Mclaren edition in my locker and was disappointed to see this camera still present on the pro when we received the prototype.


I work with these on a daily basis, so we can take this to PM if you want.

It comes down to budget, preinstalled software aka bloatware, needs for rear cam, needs for front cam, storage, benchmarking speeds, processor power, battery usage, interface usage, customisation, security etc etc

I can suggest you a different recommended handset for each and everyone of those factors above.

Nothing wrong with the pop up camera. Unless you're an instagram model you really don't even notice a difference.

Honestly, you can't really go wrong with any brand imo..

I think Samsung tend to be the favourite at the moment, however, I'm currently using the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and I can easily say it's the best phone I've ever had.

As with everything in life, you get what you pay for so if you want the best, it's best to pay more and get one of the the flagship models of the brand you prefer.

Why not pop into a local dealer and ask for a demo of a few handsets that your interested in?

Yup any high mid to high end phone from the good brands will be great. Xiaomi make some great phones too.

With phones being as powerful as they are now I will offer one piece of advice though. Make sure whichever one you settle for gets the latest OS through the supplier. That's the only thing that's bummed me out about a couple of the phones I've had. The Manus decided that the os it shipped with was enough to last the life of the phone and I've been stuck on older OSes wanting to try the new ones without buying another phone as mine was perfectly adequate.

I rate the Xiaomi M9 over most top flagship models right now that cost twice the price. I do not believe in the whole "you get what you paid for" with phones. There are far better phones in the mid range tier market with no bloat ware, and original Android OS versions that do not have manufacturers wraps on them.
