Unfortunately "resistant" will only get so far, I'm not sure but I think the algorithm's reliance on fast memory was a part of it.
I also remember reading something about Ethereum contracts being used to "poison the well" against ASIC miners but don't know if that's ever happened.

Won't matter anyway once Ethereum moves from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake.
