Here is where tips and advice are exchanged. Where members share their findings for useful system applications, and workflow tricks to make the Windows 8 run even quicker and/or easier.

Everything from making win8 boot faster, to showing others how to do something that is alot harder than it was in earlier windows OSs.

I hope at least a few members find this thread useful. Enjoy!

Win+x and Win+i are some pretty epic shortcuts, maybe take that in.

I use them quite frequently ;)

Here is a great tweak to start you off with:

Many times you need to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows. For example, when you want to customize Windows UI and need to replace existing system files with a new one.

You have to follow no. of steps to take ownership and grant yourself full permission to access the file or folder. But now you can do it in a single step.

You just need to download following zip file and extract it. You'll get a .REG file. Run the file and accept the confirmation:

get it here

It'll add an extra option "Take ownership" in file and folder context menu:

Now you can right-click on any file or folder and select "Take ownership" option. It'll make you the owner of the file or folder and you can perform your desired operation on that file or folder.

NOTE: also works on win7 ;)

Stardock Start8

Return the Start Button to Windows 8

Windows 7-style Start menu with Windows 8 enhancements

  • Search for Windows 8-style (Modern UI) apps
  • Pin desktop and Metro apps to the start menu
  • Jump List support
  • Unified Search for apps, settings and files
  • Boot directly to the Windows 8 desktop
  • One click access to shut down, devices, music, documents, and videos
Now this may all be well and good, but alot of users may have found that editing the list of applications in the start-menu a PITA !

This is because the win8 folders have been renamed and relocated, differently than in win7.

The folders containing all start items are located in "%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" (C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs) for individual users,
AND
"%programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs) for the shared portion of the menu.

The folders may be hidden, and will not be shown in the left part of the explorer window... only the right-part and will be ghosted.

If you want to boot Windows 8 without typing your password all the time move your cursor to the top or bottom right hand corner, goto the magnifier symbol click on it, in the serch bar type run, then click on the run icon that pops up and in it type this netplwiz then click ok, a new tab will open and it will have a tick in User must enter a username and password to use this computer just un tick that and you will need to add your password then confirm it click ok if needed click apply then ok and you are done, no more entering password everytime you boot. Enjoy!
