So why include the 2 extra dies in TR socket design at all? Why not reduce the cpu package size by ~30-40% in the first place?

EDIT: NVM realised it was a stupid question, didn't know TR and EPYC shared a common socket :p
 
Future Expansion

I'm pretty sure the layout was to keep future expansion possibilities while keeping the same socket size. If the market won't buy it, no loss, don't expand. If it looks like Threadripper could take on server processors, ramp it up. By then everyone will be use to the larger rectangular socket and there will be cooling solutions on the market already.
 
really, who cares if pure sillicon or not connected deactivated die?

when AMD is not lying and they are not connected it makes barely a difference.
complete dummy dies or defectiv dies. why should i care?

the internet discussion and the outright fanboy war about it is just stupid.
 
You can buy EPYC chips ranging from 8 cores to 32 cores. (minus SMT in those numbers).
however they all have ECC, 128 lanes, and 8 channel RAM.
