The internet rumour market is hot with talks of AMD launching a quad-core Athlon II this year. According to a report on Taiwanese tech site DigiTimes, the Athlon II will be a part of Pisces, a new entry-level desktop platform from AMD.

This re-emergance of the Athlon name a ploy to get those onboard who can remember the previous Athlons being awesome ?

Entry-level stuff, grand. The market needs cpus that can handle windows/office/net/home-stuff like a hole in the head.

I hear what you're saying, but in this economic situation I'm not at all surprised they are aiming it at the entry level users

Let's hope that they're good clockers, the thought of having a nice cheap motherboard and a nice cheap processor that can attain some insane clocks makes me all happy inside. Going back to the old athlons, my old single core 939 4000+, bought for £15 (new) can clock to 3ghz with perfect stability at 45C on load.

If they can bring out some 55 or 65W, good, cheap clockers, they would definitely be onto a winner in my book.

U reckon there aren't enough out there already ?

I mean, sure there's a requirement for that kind of cpu, but I'm sure it's flooded already.

Thing I can understand is if they're replacing existing lines with more energy efficient, but equally perfoming cpus.

Athlon tho ?

Well, once ddr3 comes down in price, it would be nice to have a cheap but powerful overclockers dream.

I know there are a fair few out there, but apart from the intel pentiums, there are none that can be paired with ddr3.

Bout time AM3 made itself known.

It's almost like they're being happy to stay in the Intel shadow and it's freakin frustr8ing.

By the time AM3 is realized, Intel will release a proper i7 range with proper cache, DDR4 and quad channel.

DDR4, which offers no discernable benefit to ddr3, but costs 4 times as much. And just to make sure you are wringed out of every penny, the socket will change to 1367...and you'll have to buy eight sticks of memory.
