It looks like AMD will be announcing FreeSync 2 at CES, aiming to deliver HDR content with low input latency by removing the display tone mapping step.

Read more on FreeSync 2.

Hope they come out real quickly and at an affordable price, otherwise I'm going to buy the MG24UQ with Vega.

"What’s FreeSync2? Well, it’s not FreeSync1 successor, in fact it has very little to do with FreeSync. FreeSync 2 is simply a new technology that will automatically switch your monitor into HDR mode, and that’s pretty much it."

That is an oversimplification.

FreeSync two does not just turn on HDR mode, it allows your GPU to do display tone mapping for HDR images to lower input latency.

One huge problem with current HDR displays is that it can add up to 32ms of latency to the display, which is a huge problem for gamers.

So basically just HDR with lower input latency.

Having seen HDR in the flesh on an LG 4K HDR display I wasn't really impressed to be honest having seen before and after shots, Looked nice but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy a display just for HDR.

Why, surely it's a monitor that does less if the GPU driver is doing the required tone mapping operations?

Yeah, but I imagine that the monitor will also work with non-AMD hardware, which will require those features.

Also, HDR in itself means that the monitor will be super expensive. Just look at proper HDR TVs.

HDR TVs are coming down in price. Look at how much 4K TVs go for now, nothing in comparison to when they first came out.

I agree, they will come down in price, but in 2017 they will be very expensive.

It still has it in case the users GPU cannot handle that operation. So that won't change its price. It'll be expensive like every other screen technology. Gonna be a few years..
