AMD Ryzen 1950X Threadripper Retail Retest

So forexample: Streaming, whilst Video Encoding and Gaming would be the "Manual OC but not as High OC" category? Or would it be better to let the Processor decide which of these applications might need a boost at the moment?

I also have a a 1950x and a Corsair H110i GTX for almost a month now. I am able to get stable OC at 4.1Ghz but not 4.2
The only reason for that is the AIO can't cool down the CPU.
I will do some tests whenever I get a cooling solution designed specifically for Threadripper. I hope TTL does this as well because the whole results are going to be different when we are able to overclock.
 
Hey, long time listener first time caller. I have a 1950x rig and I am Prime 95 stable at 4.05 GHz on Noctua's TR4 NH-U15 with 2 140mm fans. Volts are set at 1.4 and although it gets to 85C in prime I don't see it get passed 75 unless it's a really hot day under regular load. I have a lot of airflow in my Thermaltake View 31 case though.

I compared the round Acetek cold plate to Noctua's design

I found that a 240mm AIO was no match for air cooling with the proper cold plate design. Enermax is sending me their TR4 360 AIO and I am expecting it to allow me to push things a lot further. I think AMD really should have had the big boys on board, Corsair, Thermaltake ect to design proper cooling rather than just suggesting you use the round cooler.

Anyways. I think Threadripper is actually better suited to overclocking than Ryzen 7 was now that the silicon has matured and it won't be crazy to see 4.2 GHz stable on all cores with a proper interface and custom cooling.

Full Coverage!

Please test again with appropriate cooling for TR4 with closer to 100% IHS coverage, would seem that is a minimum requirement for overclocking retail TR, of course that would be easier if any full coverage options were available! / in stock! - Personally I am looking at the Liqtech TR4 AIO and the Arctic Freezer 33 TR as possible options, latter being a bit of an odd product; a budget cooler for a premium CPU?, but hey given the stock levels it may be a good temp/backup option if it comes to market where I am soon! thanks
 
Ive tested with the Noctuas (Ive got all 3) and they were a shade worse than my 360 on full tilt - you also need to remember I chilled the room down for all these tests.

The retail CPU's are significantly more volt hungry for lower clocks than what got sent out in the first wave of samples.

Either that or Ive got two CPU's from either side of the planet that are both dogs.
 
Hi Tom, thanks for the fast reply! Yah I figured air cooling even with full coverage is not going to cut it either - that's why I like the look of the Liqtech as the only? AIO with full coverage atm. Obviously would be brilliant to have a full custom water loop but I don't think I can stomach the hassle, and I would not be able to include GPU's in the loop anyway as I swap them out for testing

I liked the sound of an even 4ghz but if overclocking disables all of the boost then it kinda makes it a hard choice to bother, all or nothing

So last remaining hope is on the Enermax Liqtech's 500W+ TDP eeking out some better numbers, who have failed to respond to any of my support enquiries, were instantly out of stock in the US and are seemingly absent in the UK as of writing.

Seems a bit of a failure for AMD to release a CPU with no 'real' cooling options beyond 2 air coolers, fiddly custom loops and one AIO that has no stock :-D

at some point you have to ask yourself if overclocking makes sense or not.

for many who OC it serves no other purpose (at all) beside bragging rights.

i mean i can gain 10% more performance in cinebench when overclocking (i have a 1920x).
but then i can´t use my noctua aircooler (well i could but the temps make me uncomfortable) and power consumption goes through the roof.

i payed 79 euro for the noctua u14s. for a 360 AIO i sure have to pay twice that.

keeping all the negative things into account... that´s absolutely nonsense for 10% more performance.

i use threadripper for content creation and every crash cost me money, so i think i will stick to stock speeds. it´s just not worth the hassle iyam.

temps, power consumption and cooling issues.... and all that for 10-15% more performance?

i mean people say OC is fror free.. ok.
but to be honest with the current HEDT cpus from AMD (and intel) it is NOT for free.

When you aren't benching, the temps will be a little lower. Besides, if you aren't making use of all 32threads, the cpu won't be getting that hot either. You could do a small OC and lower volts more than likely.

when i render all cores (24 in my case) are on 100% and for hours sometimes for 2+ days.
well now with threadripper 1 day. ;)

i think i could overclock with the noctua cooler. but i doubt i would feel comfortable doing a 4 GHz overclock and have that system running a day under full load.

maybe i will try 3.8 GHz on all cores.
but i like to have my temps at ~62 degree celsius.
 
Im genuinely just at the limits of the silicone with mine - Ive played around a LOT and even checked in with OCUK (8pack) who says most of the retails are capping out at 3.8ghz - if you get one that hits 4 at decent temps on all cores youve found a cracker

Sadly my cracker has to go back to AMD :(
 
I will preface this by saying that I am an Intel fan through and through but...

I am SO happy that AMD have finally brought out a chip that, as far as I can tell, is really giving Intel a run for their money and forcing them to innovate and drive the industry forwards :)

When I first saw the new chips I thought "holy cow that's monstrous" and my hunch of it being a pita to keep cold also turned out to right. But still great to see AMD finally back in the game!

Re lack of cooling options, the failure might not be with AMD so I take that back, the turn around time on Threadripper from announcement to release has been shorter than I thought given no one outside of AMD knew about it till May this year, I am just impatient :-D
