AMD reveals its Ryzen 7 5800X3D - The "World's Fastest Gaming Processor"

Oh what a fantastic name choice there. Not.

FFS at least call it a 5850 or something to stop the confusion.

AMD, becoming the new Intel lol.

TBH having read all of it I think that.

A. You would be silly to upgrade to this (because tbh there's nothing wrong with the 5000 series as it stands) and
B. If you were buying from new Intel would likely work out cheaper. There are DDR4 boards for Alderlake you know.

TBH if I already had a 5000 CPU I would not touch this with the new one coming out shortly after. This all seems like a stop gap to me.

Yes, but it supports motherboards that go all the way back to X470/B450. Those users could be using Ryzen 2000 series CPUs.

This is a huge upgrade for Zen+ and Zen 2 users, and it would be a cheaper upgrade than going to Alder Lake or AM5 when the time comes.

It's not a huge upgrade for Ryzen 5000 series users, but users of older Zen CPUs will see huge gaming benefits.

Ah, OK fair enough I didn't realise that. It will be pretty shaky though. IIRC on some of those boards you have to pick, up to 3000 support or 5000 only with no way back.

BTW we've not seen the prices yet. If they are anything like 5000 launch prices it may just be cheaper to go with a 12400 and board and use your existing RAM.

It's also annoying that they are releasing the 5800X3D (got that's a stupid name, I am deffo standing my ground on that one lol) and not lower end parts.

Starting to get a bit snobby IMO. Mind you, I reckon Intel are going to clap their GPU department any way so they may need the cash.

Suck it up

TBH, I think anyone buying new now is setting themselves up for the ultimate buyers remorse at the end of the year... Buy DDR4 AlderLake/Zen3d now, and be stuck on a platform that can't be upgraded at the end of the year, buy DDR5 Alderlake now and be wishing you had that extra money spent on current DDR5 prices when new CPU/GPU/cheaper DDR5 will offer better performance... and with Intels track record, a good chance your ddr5 motherboard won't accept the new release Raptor Lake cpus.

Upgrading your current pc now with old gen tech is the way to go if you really need better performance. Buying an entirely new system now is likely throwing money away performance wise given the generational improvements coming.

The only thing that beats buying new now and suffering buyer remorse at the end of the year, would be the remorse when all the new tech is sold out and unavailable as soon as it gets released. 🤦♂️

I'll be upgrading my 3700x to 5800X3D as it'll offer better than Alderlake gaming and will see me through to the time when RaptorLake/AM4 products are freely available

I had not considered the Alderlake DDR4 "upgrade" case if you already have well specced DDR4 ram. Though I still think it would be a stopgap solution like my plan to upgrade to 5800x3D.

I like the 5800X3D name scheme... The 3D implies it is a 5800 with 3D cache. 3850x would imply a boost clock upgrade to a 3800x, not the extra cache.

Disappointed the 5600x won't get 3D cache, as a stop gap solution for me it would be money better spent.
