that's a lot of core's, lets hope AMD have struck a homerun with Zen.....the market needs a shake up.

hard to know really, could be an entirely custom supercomputer part for all we know.

To be fair, it's only the code allowing for 32 cores. Doesn't necessarily mean the chip is every going to get made. Do hope AMD kick arse this year though, Intel need to get their feet back on the ground.

It'll get made IMO.

One place that AMD had Intel for years was the server market. Their 16 core CPUs were nowhere near as fast as Intel's but in server land you can use as many cores as you have and to that end the opterons were fantastic value. Like half the price of a Xeon (why do you think Xeons are such ridiculous prices atm?)

They'll bring this back to the Opteron sector IMO.

More of a Software Optimization

For me, performance all lies now in the software application. How it will use the exisiting resources to speed things up. More cores does not mean more performance since our coding is still with single core/thread applications. Seldom we find multi core support software and this is only used on CAE or CAD softwares and Conversion and encoding softwares. If the industry wants to make faster programs, coding is the first thing we need to look into. Games are now shifting to Multi Core support. I hope that Productivity Applications do the same. With the Up Coming Zen Core Architecture, I just hope this is not the same as Bulldozer Hype... They released in the same quarter of its release year... :(

It's not really aimed at that kind of market at all - very few applications can make use of more than 16-24 cores for a single task due to compiler support - this is aimed at the virtualisation market (ESXi/HV/KVM etc.) as that's where the server money is. That said Intel began sampling their own 24c+HT Xeons to certain vendors and customers in late-Nov/early-Dec and their own 32c+HT Xeons are likely to ship early 2017. So it's great that AMD want to compete again but they better get on with it or they'll miss the boat.

Really nice to see AMD on target and aiming in the right direction, but please they need to change the name.. calling something that gets hot "Zeppelin" is just asking for all sorts of cursey trouble.

First thing that comes to mind with that name is Robert Plant and Jimmy Page...TDP's are supposed to be under control but we'll have to wait and see.
I guess " Zeppelin" is to associate the chip to it's Zen architecture other then one of the most publicized catastrophe of the last century.
Although it inevitably comes to mind and especially will if AMD can't deliver a competitive product with Zen.
Then again, what comes to mind about "Zen" ?

Bulldozer was worse than the Hindenburg crash.....

OK so I am joking. Who gives a stuff what they call it? performance talks BS walks.

Dude.. this chip isn't meant for gaming. It's definitely for the Enterprise/HPC market which is entirely different from more simple gaming/professional markets

Good signs for AMD but yes I'm with Tolemac, Wraith and AlienALX on the name. I didn't get visions of Robert Plant or the first few bars of Kashmir - I got visions of Firey Hindenburg crashes and Bombing raids over London in WW1. Maybe I'm just older than the naming gurus at AMD.

Don't get me wrong the Zepplins were the biggest and baddest Airship of the 20th century and ruled the skies as far as heavy lifting went during their time so I can see where they were coming from.

My thoughts exactly there and lets not forget Auschwitz has just had the 70th anniversary of liberation don't get me wrong i'm not religious but I think etiquette should have been expressed on AMD's part

Come on guys, there were plenty of airships/zeppelins inbetween the wars as well. They were only used by the US in WW2 for patroling the coastline so I don't get the Auschwitz link either.

I mean, the name Zepplin could be refering to the person who invented them. It could also refer to the new 'ships that are being made at the moment.
