It doesn't seem likely that AMD decided to 'unlauch' their reference design after Nvidia announced Blackwell, because then AMD would have stockpiles of coolers doing nothing. So the decision was likely made months and months ago. But did they expect this level of hype and interest? Maybe not because it's likely they were going to price their GPUs higher and were banking on Nvidia being less competitive on price (and didn't know DLSS 4 would be so good) and making their profit through margins rather than volume and market share. But now that they've seen enormous popularity, maybe they're regretting not making a reference model. Or maybe they were forced to because AIB partners wouldn't allow it.

They were likely going to but decided against it since they knew they'd be priced so aggressively there'd be little room for their partners to compete on pricing or just flat out couldn't. Unlike Nvidia they need their partners.

I think a mixture of things here but more likely to maintain there msrp via amd site sales but myself and decent card below 700 is good value on the XT and while dlss4 has an edge we are really really taking slight and once you run optiscaler in cyberpunk you’d soon realise just how poor value them 5000 series cards are the fact is the 9070xt is kicking butt and at an extremely lower price compared to the 5090 the 4090 on the other hand is a vastly better card.
Amd have sold a ton of cards your talking small stores selling 700 thats like 500k now if thats generally the norm id guess they may have sold 3.5 million cards it’s possible worldwide. If there margins are say 40% then they made 1 billion profit in a week.
They most definitely were not ready for the demand but oh my do they deserve this break and partly for getting there dxr way way up and fsr4 is very very good.
The real reason they got the break this time is cause people are fed up with nvidia and it’s prices but the key thing this time is the lack of availability and general folk aren’t like us enthusiasts they do not hold brand loyalty if something is good they will buy if available and so they most definitely annoyed with nvidia.
The rest of the enthusiasts well we all have thoughts and opinions but fact if nvidia doesn’t do something quickly they will lose a gaint chunk of market share this generation the biggest mistake they made was penny pinching over physX to me that is really negative to attack your own software well that’s nvidia they love to segment things.
If amd ever does those similar practices id call them out in the same way, but these 9070 cards are vastly better than i was aware before bring in my hands.
Where amd went wrong i do mean wrong on the launch is not getting all the real information out on these cards full sooner with more information and reviewers and testers being given freedom to share the information.
Cause even when I brought one I didn’t know how good it was until a day later and this i feel was a mistake on amd side.
