Hi guys,

just got this CPU for Christmas, but my current system (P45 board + Q8200@3.22GHz + 4GB DDR2) is not compatible. So I was wondering if it's worth buying a new board and DDR3 RAM, or just sell it.

My main question is: Is this CPU so much better than my current one to deserve such an investment?

Thanks

Seems like a good opportunity to upgrade to me

Have fun picking the board and RAM. You should get decent money for your old hardware.

No it's hardly any better than what you have now. Don't waste your money on a board and ram for it.

I used to have an 8200 and it seemed fined for everything I did. I've got an i5 now and I honestly wouldn't notice the difference, the differences in actualy CPU performances when you're using an OS now are pretty small in my opinion so just stick with what you have, sell the 955 and see if you can get a nice GFX card or upgrade some ram or something

Get an SSD if you want to feel more speed. Easiest way IMO.

But yeah, what you have is pretty good and certainly won't seem any different if you threw money at the 955.

Try to remember, the Phenom 2 range are basically on par with the 45nm quad series (which is what you have) and thus no better than what you have really. I mean sure, going DDR3 would show improvement but TBH you could get a new 775 DDR3 board and go that way. Personally I would hold off until you can afford to go I7 as there's no point in small leap upgrades. Do it properly

I've been wanting to upgrade my system for some time now, but with some research and testing,

realised that maybe the only upgrade I need for now is to replace my HD4850 or get an SSD.

But since I got this CPU for free, I thought this could be a good oportuniy to upgrade.

From what I saw in some reviews, I was already prepared to sell it, but was afraid to make a mistake. So better ask!

i suggest to sell everything and wait a few more says for the new intel sandy bridge and see what you can afford

I've found a buyer for my old rig, and maybe for the amd 955be too. So lets just wait for the SandyBrige CPUs. Just hope to get one before the end of January.
