AMD Opteron 175 - any good?

Hi guys,

I need a bit help… I want to buy Dual Core socket 939 CPU and particularly was looking at X2 4400+ but the shop I will shop in doesn’t have it anymore so I came across Opteron 175. It is Dual Core 2.2GHz (Denmark Core), 2MB L2 cache and x11 Multiplayer.

I just wanted to know does anyone here ever had to deal with this particular CPU and if so I would like to hear you thoughts.

Thanks,

Andy

Depending on batch it should do ok.

the X11 multi and a decent mobo should give you the space to hit 3300MHz+ if the CPU is any good (and the cooling can match it)

Cheers Kenny!

I also had a look around on XS and peeps are saying good things about this CPU. Looks like if the stepping is good then 170 & 175 Opterons can hit 3.0GHz mark on descent air cooling with no problems.

I think I will give it a go :).

Nice chip as Kenny said, but as you know not all hit these speeds and some can only muster 2.9GHz, its all down to the luck of the draw

Yea I know mate, however I’m more likely would be looking at 2.8GHz and to be able to run it 24x7 at this speed and all above it would be more for benching I guess (btw haven't done any benching for a while :D).

have you had a look at the much cheaper 165, i still have mine in another PC and it used to clock very well and from what i have seen on forums and heard the 165 seem to be a little bit better when it comes down to clocking than the others, there is the problem though of only a 9x multy but you could always put your memory on a divider, anyway i know mine could do 2.8 GHz easy with stock volts and most could as-well.

I have a x4800+ for 939 with an Asus A8n-SLI Premium mobo. Is there a better CPU I coudl get (Like an Opetron), or should I just upgrade my mobo, CPU and RAM?

Yea, I had a look at 165 as well but then as you saying it has only x9 multi and stock clock is 1.8GHz so if I would go for 175 it would give me another 400MHz so it’s kinda beneficial in a case CPU has bad stepping and not OC very well but then again there is possibility that 168 could have better stepping and OC better than 175 (you never know) so I guess it's ptetty much a lottery.

Anyway I had a look around and now I’m considering going over to Dark Side and upgrading to Conroe :D.

If you can afford it upgrade mate or just stick with what you have for the time, there is know point in upgrading your 939 as the 4800 is quite a good chip, but as said if you have the cash then upgrade to Intel or just see what AMD have to offer.

Agree, X2 4800+ is quite good chip and there wouldn’t be much point to replace it with Opteron. AFAIK your motherboard is quite decent too so there is no point to change it either. Without knowing what memory you are using I would say you could probably upgrade your RAM but then again it’s could be OK as well 8).

Edit: If you are really desperate to upgrade to something extremely faster then only option at the moment would be to go for Conroe.
