Does AMD's FX Linup still have some life in it? Let's see.

AMD FX 8320e 8 core CPU Review

I'll be honest, when I started this review I was not expecting much, but AMD have delivered a great product here.

The power draw results are very impressive, given that it is mostly changes in the microcode and the performance you get for the price is fantastic.

I think the price and what you get is key here, especially when you look at what you get from an i3 for the same price....

I just wish AMD could hang with the big boys again, as soon as they do it I'll build an AMD rig. I'd love to but I'm not really on the market for budget components as good as this may be for the price. :\

Some new high-end gear from them would be nice :) need something sexy to slot into my PC-P50R. That case is a weird AMD anchor for me :p I should never have bought it!

The Excavator CPUs seem to be very interesting, might want to look out for those!

As for this chip, it seems like a steal at that price! I wouldn't even want an i3 now that these are available.

The 8320 has always been good value. Most games can only use physical cores so its got the edge over an i3, especially when overclocked. The 6300 is also an epic ultrabudget cpu.

Heck, it'll keep up with an i7 3770 in Battlefield, atleast mine did and that was when it only really was running at 4ghz and I could've got much more out of it.

The lower TDP is also impressive, why couldn't they have done that earlier on?

Great review! But it would be interesting to see if you upgraded the cpus to see when you woudl reach the point where the GPU was getting bottlenecked

Where's the i3 in the graphs?

Really very odd to title it essentially AMD vs. Intel (on FB at least) and then not show the actual results? Makes the comparison moot surely?

Don't let the fanboys hear you say that, According to the fan boys an 8 core CPU from AMD is the perfect match with an Nvidia GPU and with Intel you're only paying for the lower power consumption, Not even kidding I've actually witnessed people spewing this garbage and get violent when questioned XD

Bloody fanboys!

I think AMD have taken a big hit.

I actually think Nvidia have taken a large chunk of amd's revenue recently and its going to have a big effect on future projects.
I want to see a chip that just does the same as Intel performance wise and costs much less, I dont care about a few degrees as I can just get a better cooler, and I dont care about power consumption as we all know the difference is like a few quid a year and if your from the south of England that's basically a baked tatie or a pint of beer.

Rant over

Ok.... I'm following AMD more than do with Intel or Nvidia (well I follow Intel too a bit) But I never say stupid things like this. I know people who do though, piss me off everytime

[Sorry for the double-posting/bump]
Hey Mark, how easy was for you to hit 4.8Ghz on that CPU? Did you have to tinker a lot with the NB/Base Clock to get it? I just noticed that this little behemoth unlike his brothers that cost around 200+Euros in greece, costs 150Euros that's 50% the price of the latest i5 seriously a value for money. Did you feel that the 970 chipset was a limitation to the overclocking? I'm now considering the UD3 990FX board by gigabyte, with that cpu and that board I will have saved myself a ton of money that can be invested in games. I've just realised that a new title goes for around 60E at launch. It would be silly to own a 1.5K euro machine and just have LoL CSGO and a few more games installed...

My overclock for this chip was 4.6GHz, and this was with just multiplier and volt adjustment.

From what I have heard on some places, the 990 chipset is better for overclocking, but that is because they are higher end boards with better power circuitry. The MSI 970 board I used is a great board though, I think there is a version with USB 3.1, but that may be a 990 board.

I have used that board you mentioned in the past, but it was on my 1090T, but my chip did overclock well on it.

TBH when it comes to games, you are better waiting a lot of the times, you get the games cheaper, there are newer drivers and the games are patched. I'd say wait for the first sale rather than buying at launch.

With AMD you can hit better performance by NorthBridge overclocking that's why the 990fx boards are better Under no circumstances I could get a board with "weak" cooling solution especially since I live in Greece, summers are hot hot hot, so I'm hoping that a chip that cheap [wow read that out loud :D ] can overclock good enough to get some good 1080p gaming.
