AMD FX-8120 + ASRock Extreme 3

I can buy these 2 for 90 euro's from a friend. He says it's BSOD-ing sometimes and told me that was since he OC'd it. He doesn't know much of overclocking.. He told me he had put back the original clocks and that it still BSOD's, is it worth buying? As far as I know the cpu isn't broken, I think he just didn't remove the oc correctly.

Would flashing the bios help? I'm planning to use these as a replacement for my i5-661 and DH55TC mobo.

Thanks!

If you can get them working, it's a bargain but I personally wouldn't go for that kind of risk... If the CPU's buggered (likely if he put a shitton of volts through it) you could have just paid 90 for a 55 board... your call though :)

He says has only used the multiplier, that shouldn't put the CPU to risk right?

Its probably the mobo vrm's overheating the Extreme 3 is a crappy mobo i had one as a temporary motherboard and had no end of overheating problems with it the pcb is very thin and it only has a 4+1 vrm with a laughable heatsink plonked on top of them.

Sounds like he wacked it straight up to 8350 OC'd speeds (4.5 or even 5GHZ) and damaged the motherboard. Ask if you can mess with it first. I'd personally think it'll run fine undervolted but IMO you shouldn't run the 8x20s at stock. The 8120 will probably run worse/as well as your i5 does currently in games. The Bulldozer chips run lower clocks and have weaker cores.

Also, I think that motherboard is low end anyway so it won't OC much. The extreme 3 is not for 8 cores now I look at it. That'll be your problem.

Okay, thanks for the feedback! I'll mess with the mobo first, he'll probably allow me to since he's trying to get some money back for his upgrade to the 4670k.

Right, a little update: I've got everything working! Did an Intel burn test as well as OCCT. Everything works stable, I have updated the bios. I think it was just a corrupt Windows which was causing the BSOD's, because I have experienced no BSOD's whatsoever. Today (in a few hours, going to have some sleep first) I'll put everything in my current rig to replace my i5-661, install Windows on an SSD and start overclocking :)

Thanks for the help everyone, got myself a cheap upgrade!

Be careful if you want to OC it, that mobo isn't really supposed to work amazingly well with the 8 cores :S.

'grats on the find though, nice to see it was just windows :)

Hehe, just put everything together with parts I used with the i5-661. Guess what, Windows 8 still works like a charm without re-installing! I'm going to try some overclocking now, brb :)

I'm not joking when I said that motherboard is going to be a pain, be careful.

I didn't think it'd be a joke. I never liked ASRock anyway :)
So, like you said, this isn't working very well so far..

What is happening to it? I personally like asrock's higher end stuff but yeah, the 970 'boards are utter poop.
I've fried an extreme 3 with a 4300 @4.2 so you might want to undervolt the 8120 for the time being and pick up an Asus board like mine for cheap.

i picked up a asrock 990fx extreme 3 for my friends build, i haven't had any problems so far though i haven't tested much to be fair

That might be a great solution! I was planning on upgrading to a 4770k earlier, but this cpu does the job fine for now. What board would you recommend? I'll look into some nice boards as well, I'd prefer a blue-themed one by Asus or Gigabyte.

EDIT: The problems I'm having; I can't get anything stable above 3.7ghz<_<

EDIT2: Hm, the MSI 990FXA-GD80 looks very attractive. It's a bit expensive though, looking at this 100 euro cpu imo

UPDATE:
The mobo or the cpu seems to be faulty, I think it's the motherboard. I'll return both to the owner and look for something else since I don't have any other AM3+ mobo to test the cpu with..

Let's get back to my i5 for now, might upgrade later on. Does anyone know something about unstable fps using a nvidia card in combination with an AMD cpu? It sounds like an odd combi, but is it?
