AMD Future mobos

With all the aquiring and the buying and the companies sleeping together. How long do u think it`ll take AMD to product a new form-factor of a mobo, with very decent stats, that is slightly bigger than a µATX, but nevertheless smaller than the regular ATX ?

Lose the parallel and serial ports, ps2 connectors, floppy and IDE.

Make sure of 6+ USB, onboard sound (of a good quality), 1 or 2 1g lan, possibly 4/6 SATA2+

Limited expansion slots, prehaps 1 or 2 graphics slots, and a version with a decent onboard that can boast a better bus speed than normal coz of the integration, which they can of course work on 1st hand - no need to conform with any1.

Half size pc cases maybe ? I smell something on the horizon.

I can see why case modders would like it, but for everyone else it is just another incompatible standard. Also I can see a shortage of slots, with 4 take for 2 graphics cards, one for audio, one for physics, and maybe RAID that is 7 slots, so I don't think they can really save any space on slots, but this is just my 2 cents.

Sounds like it would be a good platform... I don't use any of the mentioned crap any more. Well wait, I do have a floppy drive still so we can't lose that :p

Ya that`s fair, which is why I think they could have a hybrid also which "conforms" prehaps, but still lose the redundant clutter ports, ps2 etc.

Frag - pfft - how about the allow 1 or 2 usb hubs internally, which can double up as case extensions to front - or a connector the same/similar to a laptop floppy connector ? nice and small. On the lappy front, I *think* that connector has multiple uses, optical, zip etc - however a small passthrough circuit I believe is required.

And get opticals working off SATA ports, IDE can be totally removed then.

no way!

KEEP PS2 PORTS!!!!!

i know alot of pre-boot programs and devices that will NOT accept USB keyboard and mouse.....

IIRC AMD/ATI are coming up with an all-in-one solution thing. They announced it at that conferacne thing XMS and Kemp went too.

Theres a long news things about it somwhere.

Well if you love AMD then you love ATI too cause they are one company. Seriously, Nvidia grapchis=ATI graphics. Same crap, another name until now. No sense to being a fan boy. I also agree on keeping PS2 ports. I actualy still use my PS2 port sometimes on a PS2 keyboard. I still use an IDE 200gig HD and an IDE DVD-burner. Some people cant afford to upgrade everying to SATA. You can lose the printer and com ports though, thats useless. I dont see a need for integrated video when you have 2 PCI-E slots. I believe their should be 3 or 4 instead and 1 PCI slot. Integrated Wifi and X-FI quality onboard audio. My $0.02.

Even if some1 wanted to stick with a ps2 keyboard/mouse, most new ones come with a 2" adaptor so they can work either way.- so that wouldn`t be an issue.

The thing with the IDE devices.. hmm, well they would be `new` boards, emphasis being that u`r looking to build a new machine. I know that the majority of us will, through the year, buy a piece of kit and integrate our existing stuff around it - end result is a small outlay and an overall increase. But... well ok, u can have 1 EIDE slot point off the edge of the board. Going forward tho, if some1`s to consider buying all new, they`d surely consider SATA over PATA otherwize part of the board upgrade is a waste of money - may aswell buy a regular board ?!?/1

Now the crux of it is this onboard graphic issue - my arguement being they need not necessarily stick to conventional thinking if they were going to produce one. They can have their own bus, as it`s integrated, that could utilize non-special chips, but running data faster than anything existing. Of course I have mentioned that there can be varieties, ones with pci-e if u like. - so that`s really not an issue either. This won`t be like onboard gfx are today, something crap chucked out by intel to a mobo manuf - these people are in bed together and can head in the same directions.

Unless something comes out of the blue that shows an onboard sound thingy that is as good or better than some pci cards - here is the issue afaic. I personally loathe onboard sound. So here I agree the need for a slot for them.

Maybe AMD should buy Creative ?!!?! Then the likes of certain pc manufacturers can kiss their butts goodbye >.<

The onboard CPU-GPU integration is a VERY good thing if implemented well. If anyone cares to read my article about it it goes over a few of the ways it could be so good.

PCI-e GFX cards will still exist for uber-high end user (AMD/ATI think pretty much always) but this should mean that low-mid end users get amazing graphics integrated that they can easily upgrade.

Also let's think of what else a CPU-GPU combo can do shall we...? They're not just stuck with graphics after all.

Read my article and have a good think about it...it makes sense
