AMD 'Bulldozer' gets an Update from Microsoft

Microsoft today released a hotfix for owners of AMD Bulldozer CPU's claiming that Windows 7/Vista and Windows Server 2008 R2, were actually hampering performance by not utilising the Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) feature of the Bulldozer chip.

"This article introduces an update that optimizes the performance of AMD Bulldozer CPUs that are used by Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computers. Currently, the performance of AMD Bulldozer CPUs is slower than expected. This behavior occurs because the threading logic in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 is not optimized to use the Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) scheduling feature. This feature was introduced in the Bulldozer family of AMD CPUs."

Hotfix available here.

Bring on the second wave of reviews! Maybe Intel will have some competition for 1155 stuff after all?

I still don't think it's going to fix performance by a huge amount, but if it does, fair enough.

Fingers crossed it does though because if it does we will see Ivy Bridge sooner and possibly with a performance increase and lower prices for SB.

Lets hope some new benches are out soon, so we can compare how mutch gain this patch is giving the FX.

still boggles my mind that something like this has to be FIXED by microsoft. It still sounds like hogwash to me. hell if you build something why the hell would you have somebody else fix it. If this is true and it works shame on AMD for not making it optimized to start with. Or at least having said patch ready to go at release time.

I hope it brings a fair bit of extra performance, I would love something from AMD again, I miss my athlon xp

I'm sorry but I have to say it I told ya so

was all hogwash imho. Call me what you want but AMD is just not living up to their expectations at all. Looks like they need to get somebody in there who knows what to do to turn a once great company back into just that.

I'm sorry you dont like my comment but I do have the right to say it. This shit is getting old y'all telling me not to say whats on my mind. Its not that I dont like AMD please re-read my reply and you'll see what I really said. They used to be great and have fallen down hard imho the need something to bounce them back up is what I said. so if you dont like my comment thats ur prerogative but it is also mine to be allowed to say what I wish. Along as its within the forum rules. I'm sorry most of the topics of late are on AMD as I view only new content I post when I feel its warranted. So again if you dont like my comment you dont have to read it.

SIN

I would just like to point a few things out.

Intel has spent $27 billion on R&D over the last five years. Much of that R&D has translated into Intel's manufacturing prowess. giving us the 2500k and 2600k super chips, compared to previous years, this is like stepping on the moon.

Where as AMD spent less than a quarter of this, I bet on the underdog because they do more for you and give more too. its very easy for big companies to stay ahead, they have the capital to support it.

And for that reason, everyone has their own right to chose witch manufacture they go with, for what ever reason lies with in them.

You would do a lot better not to comment so much on your opposing team, it only makes you look a foul at the end of the day, in the eyes of many.

maybe to those with closed eyes. AMD used to be just as big as Intel I know I used to be 100% AMD but in your argument you say how much Intel spends versus AMD well then maybe AMD should stop sitting on their wallet and put out something to at least challenge Intel. I was pulling for BD and it crapped out. And the 6000 series while a performance increase from the 5000's came with extra negatives

Those with their eyes opened know most if not all of my comments are in jest. I do not tell anyone not to buy AMD products or discourage them from choices Hell earlier this year long before you came to this site I was on AMD look in my sig if you dont believe me. I have a cpuid validation link to my old AMD 1090T. As I stated previously I am free to make any comment I feel the need to as long as it stays within the forums rules and you are free to comment on it as well. But if you dont like my comments you are free not to read them. So to anybody who doesnt like my comment I'm sorry but I have a right to post here as well.
