AMD Athlon 64 X2

I Will be buying a new CPU soon, Im trying to decide between maybe a AMD 64 3800+ San Diego, or a AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (before you say get a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+ or a AMD Athlon FX57 San Diego) this is my MAX budget!

AMD Athlon 64 X2, seems to own on multi tasking, but for games, it doesnt do anything special over its AMD 64 cousin AT THE MOMENT. The san diego 3800+ kicks arse against the x2 3800 in games

Also I havent seen much overclock potential from the Athlon 64 X2 3800+, it can get to about 2400mhz.

However in the future, games should be optimized for dual core? if so the X2 would own!! Also will the new Windows Vista take more advantage of 64bit CPU's?

if you plan to get a dual core for vista..your going to have to get a next gen gfx card, raid, and god knows what else just to run it at all...mind you, if its for gaming..get the dual core, most games are goign to be designed with dual core in mind for the future

If ur thinking of an FX... Go with the FX-55, it will save you a lot of money... It's the exact same processor with a lower stock multi Just bump it up one multi and voila, u have an FX-57!

Yes it will be 64 bit and also will be optimised to take advantage of dual-core. so i think you should get a dual core to be a bit future ready

Get the X2 and the latest batch (E6) are overclocking very well. Going upto to 2.6-2.8ghz on stock cooling. You can check yourself on Xtreme Systems forums
