AMD 7970 Pictured

A mysterious picture has been posted by a member of Beyond3D forums, capturing two next-gen AMD graphics cards in Crossfire. These new graphics cards are certainly enthusiast (and power hungry) products of the upcoming Southern Islands family, most likely to be Tahiti XT - expected to be branded Radeon HD 7970.

The first visual observation is that these cards are hefty and approximately 10 inches long - or around the same length as HD 6970. They contain 12 memory chips (as demarkated on the picture - the 12th being at the edge of the PCI-e connector), which suggests a memory interface of 384-bit - a novelty for AMD/ATI GPUs. There seems to be a provision for 2x8-pin PCI-e power connectors on the PCB - or upto 375W power. However, both cards are powered by the SIG approved 6-pin + 8-pin configuration, powering upto 300W. The two cards are powered by a 850W power supply. This is no doubt a power hungry card, and all this power seems to be fed through a mammoth 20 phase VRM.

The first Southern Islands / AMD Radeon HD 7000 series 28nm GPUs are set to release in January 2012, most likely around CES 2012 time. Whether it will be the above pictured enthusiast Tahiti / HD 7900 or the performance Pitcairn / HD 7800, as previously rumoured, remains to be seen.

They have a red PCB because they are engineering samples, reference ones should have black PCB.

I hope so anyway because I ain't buying no red PCB cards

all you have taken from the screenshots is "ew red" lmao *facepalm*

i have a tidy amount of money saved up for my new motherboard + gpu upgrade

the card specs and leaks are coming through so i will be emptying my wallet very soon!

As I said they have red PCB because they are engineering samples there is nothing more to be taken from the pics that wasn't already known apart from the amount of memory chips and power connectors *double facepalm*

I'm sure many other people will be emptying their wallets also including me if I can find the extra cash

i really wanna see how these preform, but i'd personally still wait to see/compare to the 600 series from the other side (call me a fanboy, but as of now the green team preforms better and works with everything)

OMG Seib you've done it again fair play

.

The first thing that hit me was a memory interface of 384-bit whop whop.

And with a core clock of 1000mhz and 6000mhz plus memory, this should be with out a doubt the most powerful GPU in the world on release. This looks to be a massive jump in performance.

I'm getting 2 of these babies the day their released, I don't think Ive been this excited since AMD release the 5870.

This addiction is bad

, but good. I think i would have more money if i was a drug addict.

Wow 7970 CF will be just Epic on a monumental scale.

seiB saying the above is correct will my 2500k bottle neck 2 of these, do you think.

How dose 2 6990s fair with 2500k. if you no.

Thanks.

Don't know about that either, there is one member on here, Chaney, running 2 590s and I think he has a 2500k and he has no problems so I don't think you would have any probs with 2x 6990s.

The reason i asked about 2 6990s is to try and work out whether 2 7970 will be fine with my 2500k, but if not I have a gen3 mobo so ivy bridge should sort out any bottleneck.

I wouldn't have thought there would be any bottle neck but I don't know for sure, the 6990 is a dual GPU card though the 7970 is a single GPU card. I think you only get bottle necks with old CPUs like the first lot of dual cores or lower I don't think it's a prob with any CPU that is out today but I don't know for sure so I could be wrong.
