Amd 7870 games wont go to 1080p

I have a 7870 and a 1080p monitor and using a dvi cable but certain games such as darksiders will start up in 1366x760 when I try to change to the native res my pc freezes and I have to reset the system as even the task manager doesn't work when it happens.

I have the latest drivers installed windows 8.1 is upto date.

with other games such as sniper elite the fans will ramp rite up and that's even with the game on the lowest settings.

Iv also had a few blue screens of death...I honestly dont think its over heating becuase even when playing a game it never hits over 67c.

Have you tried a clean install of the drivers making sure to use something like Display Driver Unistaller to clear the drivers before hand?

only thing i can think off is driver issues..try installing some older verified ones not the newest ones.

maybe the game uses the wrong refresh rate.
see if there are duplicate 1080p resolutions but with different refresh rates.

Your pc probably doesnt frreeze, the resolution is not supported by your monitor so you dont just dont get an audio/video output on your monitor
