AMD 64 Motherboard Advice

Right - here we go...

Firstly I'm in the UK so I need any links/suggestions to be reliably bought from the UK!!

I am thinking of spending my money on an AMD 64 3200+ (most likely 939, although 754 is a possibility as nforce3 seems to be more abundant for that) as I have RMA'd my MSI Delta 2 and will sell my 3200+ Barton with another mobo/PSU/case etc.

I want a motherboard for this CPU, but I need it to be a 8 x AGP motherboard, not a PCi-E one (my GPU is just too expensive!!).

I have 2 x 512mb Crucial PC3200 DDR400 modules to put in and have an Antec Neo Power PSU so that should be plenty of power!!

Which mobo should I buy? I would really like an nforce 3 one but don't want an MSI one as I have just sent one back!! Or shal I get a VIA chipset??

Failing that I could get a Pentium CPU, but will my RAM fit in the boards? I have no clue about Intel, so any clues would be apreciated!

Oh and the budget is looking to be around £200.

Cheers for all your help!! :D

EDIT: I'm a BIG gamer (thus the GPU) and so games are a priority really)

In my completely unbiased opinion (yeah right).. i'd say go with one of the 600 series from Intel, the ram will be fine. The DFI Lanparty 875P-T is the board you're looking for ;)

Austin: :awhip::foff::flames::gives::damn:

AMD - GAMING

INTEL - APPLICATIONS

Your just a FANBOY beyond belief.

maybe save a bit of money on the mobo (£200 is to much) and spend extra on the cpu. maybe see if u can afford a clawhammer or winnie. you will see more of a performance gain in the cpu.

£200 on mobo AND cpu

heh, i challenge you to find a £200 AMD mobo ;)

Cheers for that mufin. I may just be able to squeeze an AMD 3500+ Winchester as well as that mobo as mine was a fiver less and I think I can stretch my budget! lol- isn't that the way it always goes! :D

So imagine I had around £250ish - any better? I could maybe squeeze out enough for the 3700 Clawhammer + that DFI board. Or maybe the 3500+ winne and that gigabyte board? :D

kempez, glad you've decided to join the A64 team, you won't regret it. The winchesters will overclock really well stock, so stay with a 3000+ or a 3200+ depending on motherboard budget. With a 3000+, you can oc that to a 3500+ performance pretty easily, 3200+ will oc to 3800+. For your motherboard, I'd go with an msi k8n neo2 plat. Seems to be a good board for ocing. If you're too tight on budget and can't slide a 3000+ in there with that board, I'd go with a VIA k8t800 pro chipset board. They're pretty decent budget boards and oc nicely. If you have SATA drives, you may wanna check out some problems that people have had. Also make sure your ram is on the tested list. If you really don't plan on ocing at all, I'd still go with a 3200+ and via k8t800 pro board like a msi k8t neo2-f. Not too pricey and you'd always be able to oc if you wanted to.

Thanks for that. The thing is that my RAM is on the list, but is not working correctly in my MSI Board at the moment. Which is pretty sh!tty. That's why I want another mnufactorers board!

My MSI board had loads of nice options, but just didn't like my RAM.

My AOpen KT600 Board was fine with it tho! :o

k8t800 will be more cost effective and should fit into that 200 pound range with a 3200+. I went with msi cause im cheap and it was the lowest priced k8t800 board at the time. you can also check out soltek, abit, and asus which carry the chipset at a similar price. the asus board is gonna be a little more expensive though. the soltek and abit boards seem to be pretty solid boards from reviews ive seen.

just a couple reviews:

soltek

abit

The thing is that I really have to think hard about this and I reckon tat nforce3 is the way to go IF it can support my RAM!

I still like the Gigabyte board, maybe with a 3200+ Winnie!

They got some nice nforce3 boards. The best are epox and gigabyte. epox might be better to go with for ocing though. The EP-9NDA3J seems to be a good budget board with some nice ocing.
