AM4 will be a unified platform for both AMD CPUs and APUs, allowing AMD's future users to easily transition from one CPU to another without changing their motherboard.

Read more on AMD's AM4 platform.

This is very interesting (though expected).

I guess price will all depend on chipsets. I will be interested to see how many chipsets come out on AM4 because the high end 1000? chipset boards will be fer-ickin expensive.

Interesting times indeed a move like this could possibly be good for AMD and it will give the motherboard manufacturers time to perfect the bios :)

This isn't going to please motherboard manufacturers, No new socket every year ^_^

Yeah **** Intel tbh. Mind you having said that just because the socket is the same doesn't mean that chipsets will remain the same dude. AM2 is the same socket as AM3 but many AM2 and AM2+ chips don't work in AM3 because AM3 is DDR3 only and AM2/+ chips only had DDR2 controllers on. However, cooling mounts remained the same throughout. AM4 will also probably have the same retention too !

Still, that said in AMD's one main switch Intel probably made a couple of hundred :D (and yes that was a joke not an exact estimation).

If Zen is as good as Haswell EP for less AMD will absolutely smash it out of the park. This is definitely the most exciting thing in 2016 IMO. I just took a look at PC games coming this year and it was awful. There's two games I want this year aside from the imminent ROTTR and the first one doesn't even release until May FFS.

A few games I'm looking forward to this year and that's -

  • Adrift
  • Deus Ex
  • Dishonored 2
  • Doom
  • Dragons Dogma
  • Fable Legends
  • Far Cry Primal
  • Gears of War Ultimate Edition
  • Halo Wars 2
  • Hitman
  • Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak
  • Mafia 3
  • Mass Effect: Andromeda
  • Mirrors Edge Catalyst
  • Need for Speed
  • ROTTR
  • Total War: Warhammer

Need for speed has already launched on the PS4 and is a bit crap. It's absolutely nowhere near as good as it needed to be and thus just becomes another one to avoid.

Not heard anything about Mafia 3.

Out of that list the only game I want is Mirror's Edge and Tomb Raider and TR is out in two weeks or so.

I might pre order Doom but it doesn't look all that.

Just noticed Gears of war.. Might give that a whirl.

Gears of War will be one of the first DX12 enabled games so that should be interesting, Also featuring online campaign co-op which is something a lot of games are sorely missing IMHO.

As for DOOM, I played the beta and it was awful.

Just watched the Mafia 3 trailer. Looks good. I really enjoyed Mafia 2 so at least that's another one to watch :)

Prepare for "OMG I've plugged the monitor on the board and I get no image" :P

Really looking forward to see what AMD will bring up against intel

It needs to be good vs current Haswell-E, Skylake, Kabylake later this year and Broadwell-E later this year for it to make sense as a purchase for me personally.

Kabylake nutsacklake etc are all nothing but refreshes of what Intel has. Their current tech has hit Moore's law and they need to move onto something else.

That will happen far sooner if Zen is any good.

I'm keeping my expectations extremely low for Zen as last time with Bulldozer and then Piledriver I was extremely disappointed.

From what I have heard it's as good as Haswell. That's about all I have heard. If that's true and the price is right then it will be very good indeed.

Skylake (when not memory dependent*) is only about 5% faster than Haswell.

*Skylake can perform far greater than 5% in some games but only because of DDR4 helping it out.

Zen is DDR4. So it could be even better than I am expecting.

I wouldn't worry about expectations dude because it can only go two ways.

1. Zen is as good as I hope and will bring AMD back from the brink.
2. Zen is crap, bye AMD.

It really is as simple as that. So I won't lose sleep over whichever the outcome as I've already prepared myself for either event.

About time! Was talking about hopefully something coming this year earlier.

I really hope its not bulldozer all over again!.. I'm going to stay optimistic

Edit:

The more surprising bit is that AMD also confirms that 2017 will see the launch of faster and better Zen+ cores which will deliver even better performance per watt with around 5-10% further IPC improvements over the same core architecture.

I'm excited now :D

Don't worry, all they have said is it will unify APU and CPU sockets. At no point would I expect that socket layout not to change in future APU/CPU refreshes. This along with newer chipsets to support future tech will give manufacturers plenty to work with each year.

I'm going to have to disagree and say it is that simple but not for those reasons. The way I see it as with everything from AMD is...

1. Zen will be ok, AMD's PR will be on point, board manufacturers will get behind them and they will be saved from the edge of death.
2. Zen will be ok, their PR will fail as usual they will get trolled hard and continue in the downward spiral of bordering on death for a bit longer.

Zen itself being good or crap is completely beside the point, I mean they could literally re-release bulldozer with the right hype and get decent sales, performance wise it's valid solution for thousands of customers. I think sharing one decent socket to go forwards with is an ok decision short term but it needs to be replaced in two years time if not sooner for no reason other than the opportunity to market a new product.

Agreed...I hate Intel's yearly socket release is continuous rebranding with minor improvements.
Some Intel owners can't remember which version they have lol!
I saved lots of dough riding the Am2-Am2+ wave.

I hope Zen will be at least at par with Haswell Devils Canyon 479x
