I had a mobo die on me and I am going to replace it, I noticed this Gigabyte GA-870A-USB3 (rev. 3.1).

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3788#ov

Older mobo is a Gigabyte GA-890XA-UD3.

I have the option of a refund or getting a MSI 870A Fuzion (not power edition).

Would it be worth getting the new socket type and future proof it for BD, using a 965 BE(C3).

PS: Quiet happy to trudge along at 3.8ghz.

Oh and anyone a mosfet cooler they are not using lol or know of a mofset cooler that would fit.

first off is the 870A Fuzion being offered as the replacement???? if so tell them to jump in the lake. As the Fuzion is 870chip where the one that died is 890chip. If you get a am3+ socket board now it will run a BD cpu but not all the functions of the cpu will be available to you. Most of those will come alive with the 9xx chips. So while it will run it .....imhop its not really future proof per-say. Now if you plan on upgrading to BD later when their released then save some cash get a decent 890 board for ur curent cpu and wait for the release of all the newer BD stuff. and lastly if they didnt put a mofset cooler on it .....its prolly cause it doesn't need one.

For one...

What in the world you use 8 cores for?

unless you are doing A LOT, AND I MEAN A LOT of rendering or photoshop and such there is no need for 8 cores.

just get a 6 core 1090t.

The GA-890XA-UD3 Has NB:AMD 790X SB: AMD SB850, the naming is deceptive.

I like the idea of the Fuzion and having the flexibility of the Red team or the Green and 2 x 16 pci-e slots.(correct me if i am wrong)

I won't be going for record overclocks either had my 965 sitting at 4ghz but went back to 3.8 for quieter operation.

Just checked the Gigabyte site, and they've now got the 990FXA-UD5 and UD7 listed.

I'd say hang on a few weeks or so, if you can, then either grab one of those, or hope there's a UD3 or similar if you can't stretch that far.

...using crappy back up PC 3ghz pentium, 512mb ram. :S

GA-990FXA-UD7 shows it does both sli and Xfire? how does it manage that one?

I think its just enabling features on the chipset. Nvidia said no sli on AMD platforms so they basically turned it off or left out the instruction sets.. Now Nvidia has lifted the ban and whalla we can do SLI on AMD again

I did not think it was Nvidias doing though. It's using the 990fx chipset which is exclusive to AMD. I would thing AMD added that so you had to use there cards only?

possible AMD said hey no way but I recall seeing it the other way I'll look and see if I can find that article. Its possible I got it assbackwards though lol

well found a couple light articles on it lol yeah I got it backwards AMD turned it off as SLI didnt scale well on AMD platforms but theres new hope with the up coming chipsets

lol found another article saying what I said lmao who really knows but the last article stated Nvidia left AMD off the list for SLI. Now these are old articles from back when it started kinda get lost reading them but IIRC it was Nvidia who said no to sli on AMD

lets hope! i have been wanting to do sli again for awhile now. I hope the 990fx chipset scales well though. Maybe JUST MAYBE nvidia might enable physx again in the drivers for those who want to use a physx card and use amd as primary display. not holding my breath though.
