So yesterday I manage to get my hands on a 3930K for a good price. Because of this I have decided to set up a X79 rig/bench. Now, my question is about the four channel memory. It's a stupid one I know, but here it goes.
Do I actually need to buy a four channel RAM set or is it possible to just get two sticks?
The store I would like to use offers more variety in the dual sets than it does the other. Then I could pick up two of those instead of a four pack. The price really doesn't matter that much. I just want a good set of sticks with low timings and decent speed so I can overclock it.
I mean, four channel is just two times dual channel isn't it? I can't see why it shouldn't work. After all, you don't need to fill out all the slots do you? But hey, I'm still a rookie when it comes to the 2011 platform so thought I'd ask.
Obviously the easiest thing would just be to use my old RAM and test it myself, but I don't have a X79 motherboard yet.
