all right, ive got major problem with one of my pc's. the sound keeps lagging and slowing down horribly whenever i play any music files. it also does it when playing any other soudns for that matter. the rig is:

duron 950mhz

320 meg ram

40 gig hdd

pc chips with 730s chipset

i really dont know why it does this, the sound card works and plays music fien in a crappy celeron 400mhz, but yet this computer lags like hell whenever it does the slightest thing. ive installed all motherboard and sound card drivers and i'm running xp pro.

any ideas?, because im stumped, and id appreciate if anyone could shine a light on this annoying issue

thanks:D matt

Well firstly you have to minimise the problem. Make sure you have the latest drivers and updates. It could also be codec problem. Which codecs or codec pack are you using. You can uninstall and install codec pack and see if its still lagging.

Defilers codec pack

http://hellninjacommando.com/defilerpak/DefilerPak-1.22.exe

Can you also post your motherboard model and mem configuration which i believe it is 128mb + 256mb and 64mb shared with onboard components. Can you try removing 128mb and just use 256mb to see if its memory related or you can test your memory with memtest ( Click Here You can burn this , its a bootable cd ).

I cannot see which chipset it is running on as few Via boards had problems with sound while using IDE controller and there was a patch for it. So if you can post more information about your motherboard maybe we can find a better solution.

Good luck.

i had this problem, i was using the onboard sound on my MSI, after 1 min of sound it would mute itself and in-game sound kept dying, i just installed a soundcard to take the load of the MB chip, works fine now

trying using winamp it dosent cain your cpu and ram as much as wmp does

ive got winamp, and i cant give you the mothebord model unfortunately. the chipset is an all in one chipset, ie, there is no south bridge, absoloutely everything goes through the 730s main chip. the board is a pc chips somthing or other, but im not sure what. ill try updating codecs etc, and tell you what happens.

If you download CPU-Z ( Click Here ) On "Motherboard" tab it should show information regarding your motherboard. You can also look onto the motherboard for model version ( Click Here PC Chips know how to section )I have checked PC Chips website and all the model numbers for socket A motherboards starts with M8 so anyway waiting for your results with the codecs.

result! turned out pc chips own version of thermal throttling was on, and itd turned the cpu down to 100mhz whenever the pc went above 30*c:( bit OTT but none the less, its disabled, and its running fine.

now, for some reason, whenever i try to install an agp card, its detected, the screen finds a signal, but theres no display. nothing, not even the cards bios screen. windows boots fine, but no display. when i check for conflicts in the windows sytem properties, its says that the 730 chip and the sis agp slot are using the same channels (memory, irq etc). do you think the reason for black screen could be the sharing? and if i disable the on board graphics and add a card, how would i be able to re-enable the built in graphics without being able to see what im doing:(

Well your last sentence is a bit confusing to be honest so to make sure your new card is installed properly and to avoid conflicting with your onboard graphics please confirm the following steps.

1 - Uninstall your old onboard graphics drivers or in control panel > systems > hardware uninstall what ever you got under display adapters. (You might need to do this in windows Safe mode if you cant do it in normal windows. )

2 - Now install your new AGP card. Make sure your monitor cable is connected to new card.

3 - Go into bios > integrated peripherals or similar > Disable on board graphics controller or adapter.

4 - Find the bios option for Primary Adapter and make sure AGP is selected.

5 - Boot into windows install new graphic drivers.

Let us know how you get on. Disregard this post if you already tried above steps :)
