Right, ths morning my 3500+ came through the pos. Great i thought to myself. Dissaspembled my old P3 system entierly and installed it. Specs are as follows:

AMD 3500+ (newcastle)

ASrock 939DUAL-SATA2

512MB (singal stick)

40GB maxtor (ATA133 boot drive) and 120gb Seagate Baracuda (ATA100 storage)

Cheapy Casecom (part of Encer) 500W PSU

and then the porblem, My PNY 128MB 5700LE (AGP X8)

Everything is runing smooth and fast and going great. Then i run 3Dmark03. Theres less artifacts in cardiff museum!!

When i installed the card it had a custom bios set to 298/498 and a welcome

message. As ive heard my MB has problems with modifyed bois i set it back right after the artifacts but to no avail. ive tried different drivers (specificly the 71.77 which i had the card running on perfectly in my old machine). In the old machine i had no problems atall and now this :(.

Any extra info you may need ask and sorry for spelling and gramma but im typing as fast as i can...

Hrmm

Have you tried disabling fast writes in the BIOS and setting the AGP aperture to 128mb? Make sure any "turbo" features are disabled as well.

Also update the chipset drivers to the latest from ASRock

Also uninstall the nvidia display drivers, boot into safe mode and run driver cleaner, reboot and install the latest nvidia drivers.

Try that and see how ya get on :)

OK, do you mean the system BIOS or the vidcard bios? Im not really up to modding the bios on this card again (the original is installed no) as ive read some horror stories about this MB and custom bios'. But ill give it a go if i have to. Or can I do it using rivatuner or similar?

Ill have to try hunting for chipset drivers in about an hour as i have a driving lesson soon:(.

Thank you......lots

No I meant in the motherboard BIOS mate - there should be some sort of option in there like that

If not it may be a good idea trying another card in the machine to test if its foobarred or not :(

Thanks. Ive got it running with on artifacts at AGPX4 using the registry hack from the guide on here and 128MB of AGP...what ever its called. Fast writes was disabled from the begining and ive disables sidebanding. This may decrease performance a little but its stable, + Im getting a new graphics card in 2-3 weeks so ill leave t liek this for now.

One last question, dose the AGP memory setteing (from the system bios) take up ststem memory? or the memory on the card.

Thanks alot

No its like a reserved memory bandwidth amount that the system uses to put the data through from the card.

Usually equal to the onboard memory on the card, or a 1/4 of your system memory :)

Are you getting a PCI-E card?

Hmm, thanks. Ive come down to the conclusion it was my card no likeing AGP X8. its running happily now at just short of 300/500 at AGPX4 and sidebanding re-enabled.

Just need to sort out the cooling as the southbridge (the AGP is ont he south, PCIE ont he north on this mb) is getting a tad warm, but i have an exaust fan, 3 80mils and a 92mil to fit yet:).

Yeah, it looks like im going to be getting me a X1600 pro and tweeking it abit to get as close to the XT as i can. Enless i can scrape together an extra couple of quid and get this:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=98265

The x1600 looks more likely at the moment tho as its cheaper and i need another stick of kingston.

Yeah get another stick as well as new card mate - you'll appreciate that in loading times and less hitching

x1600 PCI-E will be nice :)

OK, Ive Had the card working stable for a few days now by running at AGP x4, but i ant to tweek around with it. ive had it overclocked and it worked ok. but the fiddling with the settings caused it to revert to agp x8 without warning. And i like the idea of it running at X8 (yay, one extra frame!:D). I have read that X8 cards run on .8v, not 1.5 like X4 and lower. yet the X8 card can run at the 1.5v but not as fast. Well according to my Video card bios my card is running at 1.29 (for 3D performance).

Would it be woth trying the card at 0.8v? Could a too higher voltage have been causing my artifacts?

Cheers.

*sigh* no joy. Still artifacted at 0.8v at AGPX8, Anyone else have any suggeestions?

Thanks for the link TOG, those figures sure do make PCI-E look impressive, But the X1600pro im getting is PCI-E so im sorted in that respect.

Untill then though i have to putt along with this old man of a card.

i prefer the nvidia cards but pci-e is way better but u have to change the mobo to change from agp to pci-e

OK, cheers TOG. Does this mean that my card might not be getting enough voltage? If its supposed to source 1.5 from the mb but its set in the bios to 1.29.

Hehe, thats where my Mother board has an upper hand. Its got an AGP full X4/8 (not just a funny coloured PCI slot), even though my card has a fit when set to 8. AGP is supported by the south bridge. Then its got a PCI-E x16 and x1 slot above that, supported by the northbridge.

I would prefer a Nvidia aswell, but for just shy of £95 i've found nothing of comparable price:performance from Nvidia. If you know of something mrbeef by all means, please point me to it. The nvidia cards at the same level as the X1600 are out of my price range. Theres some 3dmark03 results for the XT version of the card im getting here:

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/230/6

I would have thought the Pro version would come out on par with the 6600GT looking at these benches. then if you look at the 3Dmark05 results on the next page of the review you can seen the XT is around 400 marks ahead of the 6800GT, meaning the Pro would probably be just short of the 6800GT.

Ok Im ordering my X1600 today with next day delivery:). But as many of the people here, I cant sit here with a piece of hardware isnt performing 100%. The final thing i have found and am going to try and correct for this card. When I go to the AGP settings in the Nvidia driver, it tells me my GPU will run at X8, as will my chipset. But then the OS only runs at X2!

How would i go about fixing this? I have no idea that windows had and duristiction over the AGP speeds.
