About time I went watercooling, advice needed!

Well, first post outside the Introductions forum, so I guessed a wave is in order :wavey:

I built my first rig 2 or 3 years ago, and I've stuck by air cooling through the various upgrades I've been through. Had the stock cooler, an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64, TT120, Big Typhoon, and now a stock Opty cooler, and now I think its about time to bow down to watercooling :worship: (see what I did there? hahaha)

So, with a bit of help from PV5150 I'm going watercooling! I'm getting a pump (Swifttech MCP600) from him, so I just need the rest of my stuff. Despite never seriously watercooling before, I know a bit about what I'll need, but not everything.

CPU Block: at the moment, I'm thinking either an Apogee GT or, depending on the price, a V6 with Plexi-top. My budget isn't great so I don't want to invest in an expense waterblock for 939, or the second pump which I will need to keep up the flow, so I'm looking at single intake and output only.

GPU Block: I plan to add one of these later when I get more money, but I would like it if the loop could accommodate one without the need for an extra pump.

Radiator: For this, I'm looking at either the GTS240 (sold at Specialtech) or an XSPC one - I've got room in my new modding case for a 120.2 rad to fit nicely in the front and the pump behind it, so thats what I'm going to go for.

Reservoir: To keep costs down, I think I'll go for just a Danger Den fillport (in red to match the colour scheme ;) ) which I can mount in the roof, or possibly on a small bracket inside the case - its a big case!

Tubing: basically any clear 1/2" stuff will do me I guess, probably buy some from WatercoolingUK...don't know how much I'll need though :(

Tape/clips: obviously will need some of these (not sure if tape is replaced by clips or what), so if you guys could recommend me some that would be great

Coolant: I'm confident enough in my abilities to not bother with non-conductive stuff (I mean, look at the price  ) so I was thinking some simple clear anti-algae stuff and then some Feser red UV dye?

I think thats it, I've probably forgotten something though (I often do!) :)

Any advice would be welcome, I've no problem buying used if you know of any great deals or anything :)

Thanks!

For clips use simple, easy, cheap and effective: Jubilee clips :)

I'd get Zerex racing coolant (it's pink) and should be fine with your dye

Aside from that it all looks like a good plan. If you're looking for a cheap but good RAD, XSPC Rads are very good and at a great price

Awesome, thanks for the reply! :)

Jubilee clips it is, I've heard that they can be difficult to use if the input/output are very close together but I don't see that being a problem with any of the parts I'm picking...

Yep - the XSPC 120.2 rad is £23 + delivery, while the GTS240 is £32 + delivery, so I might just go for it.

I don't see you seeing a whole load of difference in temps with those two rads tbh

And ye you can have issues, but every block I've used I've managed to fit them in

Hmmm...so what exactly is the difference (seeing as you haven't reviewed them, hahaha)

I assume its the restrictiveness - there such a word? - and the cooling potential? I'm thinking the pump will struggle a bit with a largish 1/2" loop anyway, if the GTS240 is less restrictive I'll happily fork out an extra tenner to cover the extra cost...I've also heard the GTS240 is better with low RPM fans?

I hate doing this as I know I work for a retailer of all the above mentioned products but I do like to get involved from time to time

can I just throw the name EK in to this......

Great quality and not bad on the prce side either

Could you recommend me some products then mate? :)

Not seen many EK products before, although I have heard of them before ;)

it all comes down to budget tbh, not that I expect you to openly discuss your available funds on a public forums :) ).

Names I'd look at are Swiftech, EK, Danger Den, D-Tek, Thermochill, XSPC all quality brands and products. All I can suggest is take your time and look at all the options but you want go far wrong with any of the above mentioned.

I'll happily discuss my available funds :D

I think my budget looks a bit like this:

CPU Block: £30, £35 max

Radiator: £30

Preferably including delivery.

Which leaves me with about £40 at the most for the rest of the stuff ;)

OK

EK Wave Skt 939 £26.44 (comes with 1/2" barbs)

XSPC 120.2 £23.99 (think they come with 1/2" Barbs but best check with watercoolinguk)

Fillport Red £8.11

XSPC 1/2" Tube £2.49/meter

Feserone 0.5L Fluid £2.99 then top up with distilled water from available from the petrol station.

T Piece for fillport £2.99 (Watercoolinguk)

Hose Clips £whatever B&Q want for them

Total (based on 3m of tubing and excluding destilledwater and clips) £71.99

Free del off ST if you have 25 posts and the bits from wcuk will be cheap enough delivery wise

or

everything above but Apogee GT instead of EK total £80.54

or everything above inc Apogee GT with Black Ice Rad £88.55

This should give you a rough idea obviously exluding the clips and distilled water plus you may need 2 fans for the rad unless you already have some etc.... but a rough idea aall the same

Dude where in wales are you from? I sware there's someone by your name in my old school...

As for your cooling parts im going too be unconventional ( says everyone) and say get 11/8mm tubing and the compression barbs from alphacool. Ive got them and ive NEVER had a leak and can remove my entire water loop out my PC without draining it theyre so secure. The 11/8 compression barbs can be found on ST and watercoolingUK and tygon make the 11/8 tubing. My tubing is actualy from B&Q in cwmbran though. More flexible than the standard alphacool stuff.

Everything else looks fine too me.

Add: Also if you know someone with a de-humidifier. Bam, free distilled water.

That looks good :) Thanks! I'm just waiting on a PM back from a USA mate who is going to have a number of waterblocks up for sale next week ;)

Haha, what school did you go to? I'm down in Swansea, although I'll be up in Newport tonight :D

How big compared to 1/2" is 11/8?

COME ON!!! wtf GTS has like the craziest restriction ever. Its exactly the kind of rad you DONT want. Can you get a swiftech? their newest revisions are supposed to be better performing than their old ones by a good bit, putting them in second place for performance :D (behind thermochills)

The V6 thing...uh, just don't be under the impression that its supposed to perform well.

For coolant, you don't even have to junk your water up with ethylene glycol crap unless you have some aluminum in there (which you shouldn't...) because if you don't then the aluminum will corrode and then... Something that kills the algae, and dye to make it look nice is all you need :P

Hehe, say it like it is :p

Thats changed, I'm going for a Swiftech 120.3 now ;) Happy? :p

Not sure what waterblock I'm getting, its all up in the air - possibly a Apogee GT :) I'll find that out next week...

Just like to add that after the jubilation of all the goods arriving with all the hardcore brown boxed goodness..

Don`t be overly excited and rush everything together and switch on.

Do spend some quality time reading the excellent threads and guides in the Liquid Cooling section right here on the forum.

Something as simple as flushing the rad - I`d probably forget about that in all the excitement ! :p :p :p

I have a apogee gt and im fitting it next week, so ill report ontemps and stuff, theya lso send me a free hold down plate from the us!!!!!

What pump are you gojng to be using?

Rob
