Abit 939 Fatal1ty SLI will not POST

Wonder if anyone can help me out here with a mates computer

Short story:

The board will not post: gives code 9.0

The long story

I've just installed this motherboard into a brand new system and after clearing CMOS with the Guru panel I decided to fire it up.

At first all that would happen was an error message on the POST box L'E (which I presume is 3.7, but god knows why you've installed it like that????).

I checked the memory as it said and all seemed fine. So I tried some other brands (crucial, kingston and others) and tested different configurations( 1001, 1100, 0011, 0110, 1000, 0100, 0010, 0001).

Still no joy.

So I decided to unplug the guru panel and just clear the CMOS in the old fashioned manner.

This worked. I could now get it to POST... But after setting up the bios and booting to windows, my raid array (stripping) showed up as 2 seperate drives???

I decided to reboot the system. But to my amazement an error message popped up. "Fail Safe settings are loaded...." or something.

I checked the BIOS and nothing had been reset so I gave it a reboot. Same again????

I powered down and reset the CMOS again (clutching at straws now)...

Powered on... seems fine... set it all back up... boot to windows setup... same again with the drive problem.

So I decided to reboot to check the RAID array but this time it just wouldn't POST.

Now all I get is 9.0 on the POST box which is stupid because that doesn't tell me anything :@

Occasionally it comes up with 3.7 again but not that often.

I think this is either something really simple that I'm overlooking, or a dead board ready for returns.

Friends hardware:

Abit fatal1ty AN8 SLI (obviosly)

AMD Opteron 165

1 x Geil 512MB DDR500

Nvidia GeForce 7900GT 256MB

2 x 36GB Western Digital Raptors

1 x DVDRW (AOPEN)

1 x CDRW/DVDROM (LG)

1 x Hauppauge DVB-T PCI

Hiper Type r Modular 580 PSU

Can anyone here give me a helping hand to sort him out. He would post here himself but obviously his computers down :D

not shorting out somwhere when you installed the mobo. that has happend to me a few times

look up the posyt code 9.0 in the mobo manual.

ill try and find it in the morning but im way too drunk atm

According to the manual

post code error 9.0 is when Guru has finished initial process, and the Award BIOS takes over, which leads me to believe it's related to either BIOS or power issues (I'm not familiar with your PSU, is it providing enough juice?). Are you running the latest BIOS version? Have you tried your Geil ram in another comp? Here's the Abit forum, they may have someone there who has experience the same prob you are encountering.

Edit: looks like you've already been there

to cut the long story short , its your ram. Abit boards have a history of being picky with ram and since ur only using 1 512 mb stick , it freaks the board out. Try updating the bios , also get a dual channel kit ( something with micron or tccd chips on it ) and then try.

Thanks for all the replies so far and helping a mate out with this. He got back to me saying that he will give flashing the bios another try but not sure if it will work as its not been able to post more than once. Surely if he can post it once and get a bios update done that would be enough?

Sorry... I'm using 2 sticks of 512MB (dual channel kit, matching pair etc)... messed before (1 is next to 2 on the keyboard!).

Its been tested in a few systems and I even ran memtest which was fine.

I've also tested the ram in all possible slots:

0=empty

1=full

"1001, 1100, 0011, 0110, 1000, 0100, 0010, 0001"

PSU Is fine: Hiper 580W Type-R Modular PSU - Blu

I think it is the BIOS... also heard it could possibly be the graphics (don't think it is tho).

I hopefully be able to upgrade the BIOS tomorrow (not sure of the version as I can never get far enoug

" I'm currently trying to flash the BIOS.

But it wouldn't flash. I'm thinking that the BIOS chip is corrupt or something? Would make sense as the BIOS settings keep jumping about now when I reset CMOS?

It disables the IDE adapters, sets it to network only boot... its stupid

Came back this morning and had the PC booting for a good amount of time and then it went again.

Can't flash the BIOS "Unknown Flash Type"

I'm trying version 19 (don't know why??? I'm just clutching at straws at the moment!)

just got an error code 0.4 (its not in the book)!

nope! "unkown flash type !"

again!

I think this is well and truly just a dead board with a currupt BIOS... if it was any of my hardware surely I would stil be able to flash the BIOS???"

the bios resetting to default is a common problem on abits. It happens whenever u remove the power source or turn off ur psu. Its there so whenever u overclock more than ur hardware can take , you will still be able to post and get into bios and reset ur settings. Try the abit forums and look for tictac. He is basically the master abit bios modder. About running the ram with memtest on other systems , of course the ram is fine. But ur board hates the ram. So on the fatality board , that memory wont work. Micron is the only one that I have seen work worth **** on that board. Maybe some TCCD. It hates UTT , hynix and so forth. Try using 2T timings in the bios and see if that helps. Can you post a pic of the memory settings of ur bios and also give me the correct model no. of ur ram ??

Thanks for the help so far. I did manage to get windows installed and then another mare

" board is booting again for some reason?

but is still not resetting: states error FF and looks like its stalled, but its just stopped paging to the GPU and then screen goes dead and I have to use the reset switch???"

Does that make any sense to you guys?

Well, it was up and running after doing a few tweaks from the good people here and now I'm now getting a BSoD on startup

The screen says that "An attempt was made to execute non-executable memory,"

*** STOP: 0X000000FC (0xEC39A7F8, 0x179E6163, 0x00000001)

I know this seems like its the RAM but trust me it isn't.

I've tried countless brands and countless layouts and they all produce the same error.

I've found the following thread:

http://www.techimo.com/forum/t148738.html

It mentions its down to NVidia Firewall (which I reccon it is).

So hopefull will be able to resolve it. But I'm having trouble removing the drivers as it can't be done within safe mode and I can't get into normal windows :@

This board really is nothing but bother and I'm still in two minds whether to return it or not??

Anyone here have problems with Nvidia firewall?

NEVER use nvidia firewall! There are so many documented problems with it I am suprised that they haven't removed it already.

Yep Kemp and twisted5 have hit the nail on the head, stay well away from Nvidia firewall. It's been causing issues for ages, and it should have been done away with.
