Very good idea, but I really need to know the price (or an estimation, at least) before forming an opinion on its worthyness. Also have to know if the HDD will make it vibrate too much or not.

And on the specs you listed... "Quad-Core GPU"? You sure about that one? :P

Quad core GPU in tablets and phones is not that uncommon any more.

I know about the quad-core CPU's (which this tablet has), but GPU? Last time I checked, the number of cores of a GPU should be lots of times higher than "4" to be anywhere near decent for basic tasks. Unless "GPU core" actually means something else for them?

EDIT: I checked ARM's website, I think I'll just have to go research myself on their GPU architecture. Eh. Nevermind, then.

They are much different. Hell the Tegra 4 has 72 GPU cores.

Besides they don't need that many cores. They have thermal and energy criteria they have to meet. Mobile/tablet devices rely more on optimization to get the most out of it anyways to make everything run smoothly.

Most interesting thing for me is the use of Ubuntu. I've been waiting for years to get Ubuntu OS on tablets and phones. Looks like it is happening... Slowly.

1TB is an interesting angle to go for but I'm surprised they didn't start off with a competitive tablet that compares to the rest of the market to begin with. Must be a reason.

I wouldn't be surprised if its just a slightly different PC version tbh. Considering how little hardware it takes to run. If its a smaller version of the PC the 1TB of data is actually useful.

I've used Ubuntu a little bit and I have to say it's quite a good experience. I think it would translate quite well on a touch interface.

As a Surface Pro 3 user, this UbuTab does look nice. The screen size and resolution is a bit on the low side but not terrible, the use of a mechanical hard drive is the biggest fail of all though.

I've briefly toyed with putting Ubuntu on my SP3 in as far as seeing if my flash drive installation would work but alas no. There are other methods to explore but it's quite involved and I can't afford the downtime on my SP3. To be honest Ubuntu doesn't offer me anything extra over Windows 8.1.

Hows the Surface pro 3? Me and my father were thinking about getting my mother one for xmas. But i am leaning towards getting her an Acer S7 ultrabook instead because at the same price its got a better cpu(i7) and more ssd(256GB) storage. Is that worth passing up for the Sp3? The i5/128GB model?

I imported the i5 8GB 256GB version from the states (was cheaper and before UK release) and it's powerful enough for me, but it's more Office based tasks and some time wasting stuff I use it for. The i5/128GB model is about as low as you'd want to go I reckon. I started a thread ages ago on it.

Great for passing the time on a long flight :). Most tablets can do that sort of thing (UbuTab probably included) but it's the handwriting / note taking where the SP3 really shines. The screen is pin sharp at nearly 12" and 2160x1440 so webpages and movies are great. The optional keyboard is nice but a bit of a rip of that it's not included.

It depends on whether your mum will make use of the handwriting stuff or would like to navigate Windows 8.1 through touch, the way the 8.1 should be.

Ya the Acer S7 i mentioned is touch screen. 13.3" and 1080p. She does a lot of typing so i would figure the laptop is better for that?

The problem I've found with touch screen laptops is that you don't intuitively reach out to touch the screen, it's not natural. You keep your hands on the keyboard. Maybe you should ask her what she would like, or is it a surprise?

If only apple would learn from this and start producing tablets with sensible amounts of space. 16gb wtf??@@ but 1tb that's what I'm talking about
