A little lag..

Im getting a bit of lag after gaming CSS with my dual core.

I havent reformated, some people tell me to do it, others say its plug n play.

But i have so many files and games and my dads work programs installed it would take alot of time to do it all, and with the problems i had before with the USB controller and my hdd not being detected, i dont no if i should do it or not.

Like when i close CSS, and i open lets say My documents folder or any folder, and i click the task thing and move it around, its choppy, but when lets say i just boot my comp up, its smooth and was smooth wit my 3500+.

i no this is nothing, but i like having my comp perfect, with no kinks.

Just a thought..

I believe there is a patch or something for dual core proccessors, not sure if you need it or not. Also how many programs are starting up? And how much free memory do you have? All of these things can affect the performance of your pc.

Iv installed dual core optimizer, and dual core patch and stuff like that.

i have 37 processes, and 300mb of ram is being used.

I am assuming you have no viruses etc? When it lags, does the harddrive light come on a lot? The reason I ask is that slowdowns like that are normally caused by stuff being swapped onto the disk. It might also be worth checking the system log for any errors that might be occuring at those times. I don't think I am being much help, sorry. :(

Is it possible that you don't have enough memory so that most of the OS and other stuff is swapped out. After playing CSS it has to swap it all back in again - which takes time....

Try increasing your CSS heapsize. Go to steam > My games > CSS > Properties > Set Game Launch Options > type in '-heapsize xxxxxx', without the ' ' and xxxxxxx being about 50% of your physical memory in bytes. CSS by default uses 25%.

Example:

512MB System Memory: -heapsize 262144

1GB System Memory: -heapsize 524288

2GB System Memory: -heapsize 1048576

I just realized, the my HD is the one lagging me.

Im not doing anything on my computer, just msn/steam/xfire/everest and my HDD light is just constantly on. How do i find out whats doing this?

Does it then stay on or are we just talking for a short while (20 seconds or similar) - after you quit the program

Im still getting the CSS "Retrieving server info" for a good 10+ seconds, when i used to just fly in. I no this CPU is stronger than the one i had before, so why?

And also when i minimize in and out, its a bit slower and the sound kinda loops for a few seconds. This shouldnt be happening.

Also, why would MSN be hogging my HDD?
