A fun challenge

Right so I watch a lot of gaming and computer hardware stuff on youtube and other sites. I watch all sorts of things from game and hardware reviews to project logs and lets plays etc. I do also watch other stuff like car stuff but thats beside the point.

What comes up quite often is a discussion, I say discussion I mean arguement about pc gaming vs consoles. On the pc side you get points like it is more powerful and it can do more than just game etc etc. On the console side you get stuff like I can play with a controller on my couch all I really need to do is put the disc in. One thing I keep seeing on the console side of things is people saying I can get a console for 200 dollars new or whatever the price of them is and they say a gaming rig would cost a few thousand. Now I know you can build a good gaming rig for less than a few thousand but I am wondering could you build one for say what the price of a ps3/xbox was new when they launched and would it be capable of playing modern games at a capped 30fps and with the same graphics as a ps3 or xbox.

Would it be possible?

According to wikipedia when launched a ps3 with a 60gb hard drive was sold in the eu for €599. So here is the challenge build a pc specifically for gaming for that price that would be able to run modern games with at least 30fps. For games like crysis and bf3 they only need to run it on low graphics and at 720p res.

Just the box and internals, no need for monitors because you wouldn't necessarily buy a tv just for your console in most cases. If you want you can throw in a keyboard and mouse but since you can get cheapo ones for around €20 for both there is no need to add them in unless you want to.

I am not asking to use this in arguments but merely for fun and quieten my curiosity.

Games are coded completely differently for console and PC.

Also, don't forget on PC, the OS has to run in the background, whilst the console is specifically designed for gaming at poor graphics settings.

The PS3's GPU is a modified nvidia 7800. Nowadays, a 7800 would struggle to run the games you mention even on low settings.

In short - Crysis on PC, and Crysis on PS3 and Xbox are completely different.

You could probably build a rig for 599Euros. That would play those games at the listed specs. Even better than those specs actually...

But PS3s are around half the price of that nowadays, with xbox's even cheaper...

In a few years however, it's half expected that external graphics cards will be available using the thunderbolt port. If true, then it may not be the case of building a gaming rig, but instead just adding a £150 external GPU to a laptop or ultrabook, and having a good gaming system for cheaper than the xbox or PS3. But that's merely speculation.

I get that the games will be coded differently and the games themselves will have different assets in them to run better on consoles. Like I heard somewhere that in bf3 single player on the ps3 a npc is actually omitted compared to the pc version in a walkthrough section.

Also I know that the price of a ps3 now is about 200€ and xbox's can be gotten cheaper than that. This was just a fun challenge to see if you could build a pc for the same money as people would have spent on a console and have it run modern games.

Intel G860
Gigabyte GA-H61MA-D2V
4gb Value ram
320gb sata2 HDD
7770
430w Corsair builder series PSU
Cheapy Arianet brand case (nothing realy that hot going in the case and it looks OK)
dvd-rw drive

£280 inc postage

That cpu when paired with a 6970 can pull fps around 90 on farcry 2, 60 on crysis 2, near 100 on dirt 3 at 1680x1050 on reasonaly high settings that would at the very least match consoles...

Did i win an internet for beating release prices by a chunk?
