A bit of advice.

Hi guys.

I'm currently running a 4690k and an MSI GTX 970 on a 1080 G-sync screen. Not really looking to change the panel at the moment, but am thinking about changing the GPU. I think a 980ti would be overkill for 1080, but would the change to a 980 be worth it. Or should I just wait for the next NVIDIA GPU with HBM, I think it's code named "volta", and then upgrade the panel to an ultra wide, IPS G-Sync one?

Any honest, logical, advice would be great.

Cheers. :)

1080 @ 144hz. Although g-sync is good, I can quite clearly notice the difference from 60 to anything above!

Stick with what you have for now as it's a well paired setup, that is assuming that it performs sufficiently in everything you currently use it for. Save your upgrade money for when you are ready to get a new card and a new monitor together, even if you have to wait for a long time in that period 980Ti's will only get cheaper or it's successor will be more powerful. Price to performance will always get better as time moves on so it makes sense to wait until the upgrade is needed. That's definitely the case with G-Sync monitors too.

Unless you just want to upgrade to fulfill an insatiable appetite for tech rather than to gain performance then you may as well get a 980Ti over a 980. You can't have too much overkill after all.

Cheers for the sensible answer JR. I recently changed to the Intel z97 platform from AMD for a steal just before SKYLAKE was launched and I know the price of BIG Maxwell will drop like a stone once the new family of cards from NVIDIA is launched. I'm happy with the gaming performance I'm getting at the moment, and until I upgrade my screen, changing my GPU may just be a bit too expensive when I won't really see the benefit. Thanks again :)

Stay put. My wife has a Titan Black and runs 1080p and I won't be changing the GPU out any time soon, especially when I paid £440 for it !
