970 vs 780ti

I'm currently thinking about buying either a Asus GTX 970 OC Strix or a Zotac GTX 780TI GHZ Edition, both are available for essentially the same price.

My question is apart from lower power draw is there any reason not to go for the 780ti?

Or is it worth sticking with my 7970 for now and wait for the new cards to come out.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Cheers.

Power draw wise you have to decide that - performance wise you only have to look at our graphs - thats why we make them

I HAD 2 780 EVGA SC ACX AND JUST SWAPPED FOR 2X EVGA 970 SCC ACX only reason swapped was future dx 12 and increase in vram and better performance and they overclock a lot better really happy so far

worthless upgrade imo but each to their own

I used to have 2 x evga acx sc b1 revisions both clocked to 1250 game stable
not sure 970s would touch them

also scoring just over 6k in valley 1.0 extreme hd preset 1080p

plus 780s go for pennies nowdays not really worth losing so much ££

back on topic

I would in your position get the 970 Strix

I will challenge that my 970's run smooth as silk cool and stable at 1524/8000 scoring 18967 3dmark firestrike

Id get the 970. Its basically as fast as the Ti but with 1GB more VRAM. I know there are very few games thatll use 4GB but it wasnt that long ago that they werent any games that wouldnt use 2GB. Getting 4GB now will future proof a little for later.

99% of reviews have the gtx 780 @ 876 mhz which is laughable

no wonder it seems like they're lacking, the 970 is clocked high at stock

plus 1500mhz on maxwell isn't like kepler so its probably equivalent to a 1200mhz 780

That maybe be true but the 900 series card use less power than the 700 series and where i am the power prices keep going up and i would rather use a card that uses less power

Your completely wrong there as maxwell cores are extremely efficient so each core produces double the performance of keplers cores. The 970 isn't even designed as the replacement for the 780ti it's actually the 770 replacement yet at stock it challenges the 780ti and beats the 780 now that's impressive.

I previously had a 780ti sc clocked at 1240 game stable yet my over clocked 970 beats the ti with ease.

Kepler is old tech it's power hungry, hotter and less efficient than maxwell

Yeah the new Maxwell cards are much cooler running than the Kepler cards. The 780Ti wasn't that much cooler than the 290x in some applications. Not so with the 970 and 980 as they're 20 and 30 degrees cooler not to mention drawing over 100 watts less.

I replaced my HD7970 matrix platinum to a Asus Strix 970 and I must say I am much happier with the strix :p its worth every penny I paid for it
