AMD release RX Vega and Frontier Edition launch dates

Few more months until launch... I hope AMD will release some concrete specs before then.

Another over hyped AMD product keeping people dangling in the hopes of something great. Got to ask yourself, "why showcase a gpu in crossfire?"

Only people who over hyped it was the tech community themselves.

As for the launch date itself, Pretty annoying. You can blame HBM2 though. It's the reason for such a delayed launch in the first place.
I am not buying Vega anyway, so to me it's not a big deal, but to those that waited I can see the frustration.

This^

I am fed up with the Tech Zealots on other forums who never actually buy or use the cards they hype up.

To AMDs credit they are not guilty of doing any hyping.

AMD should never have gone with HBM in any form until it was well established.

If they had released the Fury X with GDDR5 and an air cooler, it would have been considerably cheaper and easier to produce even with 8gb of VRAM as standard.

As to Vega it is not going to be fast enough to justify using HBM2 and again GDDR5X would have been cheaper and more suitable just like the Titan Xp uses.

I know GPUs take years to bring to the market but really AMD should have taken the decision back then to use GDDR5(X) and leave someone else to be the test rabbits.

It's possible AIB Vega cards may not be available until September or even October. I'm rather sad for AMD, particularly in light of Ryzen's success, something's obviously gone horribly wrong. I could see the tinge of embarrassed awareness in Dr. Su's eyes as she got through the RX Vega news.

It's highly possible that Vega (even the stock one) will not be available until September. Not in any volume.

Which would be exactly the same sort of time scale they released Fury X on around two years ago.

I really wouldn't worry about it. I can't see Nvidia doing anything before then any way, well, apart from spitefully dropping their prices a few days before the launch. Which again is a douchebag move and Nvidia fans will be rejoicing

Man, I would have been contented with just some performance metrics. So many people simply don't know whether this will be the right card for them. If AMD gave us the numbers or allowed leaks to occur then users would be more inclined to wait.

I doubt they will deliberately leak anything themselves. They did not for Fury X and we were left guessing until review day. However, whether or not they will start handing out samples and we see the odd 3DMARK score from China? not sure.

I'm not worried either way. I don't need a GPU, the world doesn't need a more powerful GPU right now* so there's no rush. It's all about price. If they can nail that performance will be less important.

* Unless you "need" ten GPUs all running at 16X PCIE for one game that's a heap of plop.

if info was going to be so light on the ground they probably should have tried to dispel some of the rumors that RX vega would be launching at computex.

I also don't accept that the use of HBM2 is the sole cause of AMD's woes. I'm not convinced its a supply issue though. Sasmsung have had HBM2 in mass production since January last year and SK Hynix have had HBM2 in mass production since August. I feel like HBM, 1 or 2, has just become a scapegoat for people to point at and go "its got HBM that must be why the card is bad!".

If AMD spent their lives chasing around rumours and trying to satisfy people who are impulsive and demanding they would fall apart.

There's only so much you can do to calm the minds of people waving money around dude. And no matter how you do it and what you do you're bound to pee some one off.

Release date doesn't matter, no matter how restless and demanding people become. What matters is £ $ - performance. Just like it did not matter that Polaris was a bit crap to the enthusiast it still slotted itself into the market beautifully because of the low price.

This is my first time to this rodeo, but you highlight their apparent consistency at inconsistency, which is a concern going forward with future upgrades.

I won't lie, I liked the £220 saving I was quoted for Acer's refreshed 'Zeroframe' Freesync XF270hua monitor, not to mention the Gsync version's ugly, gaudy 'Predator' logo and font, and Acer's mystifying decision to include BOTH on the front panel. The delay and lack of information was just not enough IMO to justify a new system builder like myself to wait any longer.

So I took your advice at the top of my lunch break, and bought the best i could afford, and pulled the trigger on the Acer XF271HU and a MSI 1080 Ti Gaming X (which is the cheapest good quality Ti I found).

That said, while i would have settled for a 1080 like power Vega, i hope the delayed Vega is a boss card, one that bests my soon to be arriving Ti On both price and performance. I won't lose out performance, just bragging rights, but a competitive AMD going into 2018 and beyond means we all win.

Buying a 1080ti is easily the most sensible thing to do right now for a couple of reasons.

1. It's pretty much the flagship, and these last longer than anything else.
2. I really don't think Vega will worry the Ti *at all*
3. It will be at least 18 months before you see its replacement, the 0080Ti or whatever.

I don't think AMD are inconsistent. A little slow? yeah I can agree to that but it's pretty much been two years to the dot since they launched Fury X and Nvidia have only released the 1080ti since as a true replacement to the 980Ti which launched a week before Fury X.

So it's not that bad.. Any way tbh? if I had the cash I would have a 1080Ti. Mostly because I truly do not believe that AMD can match it with Vega and even if they did HBM2 costs serious moula. So naturally it would have to cost more.

What I would really like to see are 2/3 cards starting at 1070 level and going up between the 1080 and """Ti. With decent prices. That would make me smile and possibly get me to remove the Fury X I am still running that just continues to get better with time.

Not themselves, but allow someone else to.

Also, I agree that I can't see Vega beating the 1080Ti. As much as I want it to and as much RedGamingTech says it should be faster because of it being a newer architecture than Pascal, I just don't see it happening.

Damn, that's a ways away, and I'm kinda wanting a replacement for my dual 980s. I only wish the 1080TI price would drop!

I should be over the moon, but gosh, i have spent so long looking into this build, and second guessing purchases, I'm frankly tired. I'll spend the money on something if I think its worth it; I don't feel Gsync is worth the premium, that chip costs more than the very nice speakers I bought for the system, a set of LED mood lights for the bedroom, or a good mic., and that irks me. I hope feel differently once the monitor and GPU arrive, and it POSTs hasstle free.

I was going more on the impression that was forming of AMD, and inconsistent with updates, rather than any solid understanding tbh; lets chalk that one down to human fallacy, so yes, your perspective appears valid, "slow" is probably a much better description.

I can't agree more with with your desire to fill that 1080 and 1080 Ti space. Honestly, that is what I was hoping Vega would do.

I can't thank you enough for the advice and support. Its been really helpful in getting to this point.

I completely understand that. Buying anything tech related is a nightmare. Two weeks ago I decided that it was my yearly upgrade treat (for my phone). I spent about 10 days looking at phones that all cost more than I paid for my Oppo Find 7a (£160) and were actually worse. To get what I considered to be an upgrade I would have had to lay out £260. Even then the phones I were looking at all had larger but lower resolution screens. It's a poxy nightmare buying anything tech... Monitors too? dear god. Took me about a month last time after the nightmare I had with the Acer.

And you are very welcome dude. Enjoy the rig, and just don't forget to give us all a look at it :D
