7800gs problem

i just bought an evga 7800gs on ebay(used).installed it and 84.56 drivers, downloaded and ran 3dmark03.wow cool good scores, works good....downloaded demo of f.e.a.r., it ran ok considering my underpowered cpu but looked absolutely fantastic.ok time to play my old call of duty game.WTF???won't even load and wants to send error message to microsoft.still waiting for their response to fix the problem:rotfl: anyways i downloaded a demo of doom 3.no go either.same error message again.another openGL, quake3 engine game, medal of honor allied assault.nope.won't work.iv'e been looking in all kinds of forums looking for answers to this problem, reformatted and re-installed windows xp, installed drivers in safe mode, etc with the same results every time.i even tried the card in another board to rule out any weird chipset compatibility issue, with the exact same results.does anybody have a clue what is going on here???evga on the phone was going to rma it but then i did the online rma process to find out that because i live in canada i'm basically screwed.

p.s i didnt mention system specs for a reason.the games in question run fine on my onboard video.its not cpu or ram or anything else.and i've had the same results on two different chipsets.and i've tried different drivers up to and including 94.24.

What PSU's did both PC's have that you tested the card in?

psu is raidmax rx-500s, 500w with 28 amps on the 12v rail.I'll say again, DirectX games run fine and I get good 3dmark and Aquamark scores.It is an OpenGL issue I am having.

Does it give you an error message about needing a dll file?

nothing about .dll files.the answer i got in the nvidia forum where i posted the same question was that my cpu doesn't support sse3 instructions which is required for openGL 2.0.so with the onboard video (geforce4 mx400) it is running the game in openGL 1.0 or something?????shouldn't the game just run in the mode it was written in????kinda makes sense but doesn't at the same time.

my replacement barton cpu should be here in a few days, we'll see what that does.I didn't mention that a demo of serious samII runs, is that not an openGL game??

That makes sense indeed. Try using rivatuner to get the game working in opengl 1 and see how that goes...

I didn't know rivatuner had that option, must be hidden in there...getting closer, thanks for the help.the card is not in my computer right now as I don't have any games I can play on it.I'll let you know results soon.

FOUND IT "disable support for advanced cpu instruction sets", is this what you're talking about???

so in theory if I used Rivatuner to force openGL 2.0 on my onboard video card and left "disable advanced cpu instruction sets" unchecked, the games should crash, right??they didn't.

maybe Rivatuner is smarter than I am.

*update*well the card is back in and drivers 94.24 installed....still having the same problems and cannot find any rivatuner settings that work.

Use the new card and change the opengl settings to 1.0 like in the beow. If it's your proccie then this should make the game run

Suggestion is to get a processor that supports SSE2 + 3

My advice would have been an upgrade...

ASRock 4core-VSTA & Celly 420 (Sinlge core Conroe). Comes too about £60 and you can use your old DDR memory, with slots too upgrade too DDR2 and your AGP graphics card with room too upgrade too PCI-E

yeah I've been thinking about a new board, thing is I've JUST put this system together.don't want to abandon it just yet.I'll check out that board you mentioned tho.

Ive tried in rivatuner various combinations of hardware acceleration and string override settings and still nothing works.

well the problem was my cpu....acquired a 1800 xp palomino and all is well.sse instructions seemed to be the problem.thanks for the help.

Whoa 1800+XP? What where you running before? Last i recalled, i dont think my XP chip had SSE2 (I could be entirely wrong due to the fact that i havent used it in ages). Anywho, as long as its fixed, i say get an even NEWER chip, cause i have found the XP 2600+ Barton (333mhz FSB) to be teh pwn.

On a side note, despite what people are saying. You are undervolting that card on the 12v rail.

you are right, no xp chip has sse2.however they have sse and 3dnow, which seems to have solved my problem.

lol, I was running a duron 600 o/c to 960 b4.I never intended to use this cpu in this build.my aim was to build a budget gaming system using parts off ebay,based on overclocking a 2500 xp barton mobile.long story short, the chip I bought was dead.I happen to live about 3hrs from the ebay store I purchased the chip,he does not test them but sends replacements in 2-3 days.

The duron was just to get up and running.no sse, no 3dnow.

So until he sends a working barton, I am fairly happy with the 1800.

Why are you so sure I'm undervolting my card?here are my system specs:

I had a 950 Duron and it had 3dnow which should have fixed your problem. Hmm wierd. And the 2500+ XP mobile is a monster, if you have water cooling.

As to your 7800 and being undervolted. My friends power supply had 30amps on the 12v rail and it was still having problems from obviously not getting enough power. They suck the juice.

yes I am well aware of what the 2500 mobile chip can do, it just a question of finding one that works.

with what I'd spend on water cooling I could get a socket 939 system, so I'll be happy with 2.3-2.5ghz on air.

Which is exactly my point. You can get 2.3-2.5 with a standard AXP 2600+ Barton on air instead of spending the money on getting a 2500+ mobile chip. Youll spend as much money on that as you would a S939 single core.

actually I got my barton 2500 mobile for $30.too bad it didn't work.Luckily the guy I bought it from has an amazing return policy and has sent 8 replacements so far.As I live close its not a big deal but still I'm getting frustrated.I bought a lot of 5 off him for $150 (some mobile, some not)and none of those worked either.5 more will be on the way.I'll keep one and get full refund on the other 4.
