7800 Ultra back on!

Any news on them changing the clockspeeds as well, or is it just the amount of memory?

I always thought this would happened tbh as long as the R520 wasnt appalling, just so that Nvidia can be top in all possible ways before the Xmas period.

I saw something like this talking about it being 90nm too!!

This is the G71 - not the G80 due out in the first quarter of next year!!

Exciting I wont have to sell me mobo after all!!

why would you have to sell your mobo for a g80?

Thats the point I wouldn't........ I was refering to crossfire and the X1800XT's - if I went for them I'd need a crossfire motherboard.

I tell ya the real motherboard winner here would be the one that released a motherboard compatable with crossfire and SLI in 2x16 PCI-E with SATA2, supply 4v to the DIMMS and 1.85v CPU............ job done!!

Its a shame that ATM, you have to choose ATI or NVidia if you want 2 cards. :(

Put your ideal mobo to a company Mav... I got positive noises from Epox when I made a load of suggestions :) Worst they can do is nothing, best case is you become a less annoying Wendy. :p

Only motherboard like that is on the ATI side atm with the latest Xfire boards from DFI and the grouper versions as well.

The split between Xfire and SLI is very annoying, luckily i cant afford 2 cards anyway so it's not a problem for me lol.

I don't see how this would work. Would you use a RDX200 NB and a NF4 as SB (as with the gigabyte quad royale)? Or would you make your own chipset with the features of both. If the latter surely the performance would be shocking.

I think the point here is it's a nice idea.

I totally agree it's difficult to see how it would work - but some guy somewhere gets paid a fortune to figure these things out and to make em work.

It's just a real shame that when you choose multi GPU graphics you have to make a conscious choice about which set-up you will have (ATI or Nvidia) - Not just that changeing the mobo is a ball acher of a job - it would be easier if you did not have to change just because you like the look of ATI or Nvidia graphics solutions.

I do like the idea of an Nforce/ATI north/south bridge mutant motherboard - probs cost £200+ but I'd buy just so I did not have to swap out if/when I changed my GPU's.

Of course looking at the limited edition 7800GT Duo from Asus (2x7800GT's on one card) - if you could get that to run sli.......................... :)

It's a nice idea, like that motherboard that could run both AMD and Intel chips.

Didnt perform great and it was a bit impractical but the idea behind it is a good one.

I think though if you can afford a dual card setup, you have the cash to be able to change the whole lot if you want to stay on top.

True mate true, these innovative ideas are seldom thought through with anything other than the budget conscious in mind hence there are usually shortcuts or other compromises. But what if.......... we can dream can't we?

I think most who have a working SLI systems will look toward performance and price - if you already have 2x7800GTX's for example, it looks right now as if there is a decent performance leap for choosing X1800XT's crossfire - but to what extent is unknow right now (relatively speaking, as tests we have seen appear to be in controlled environments and drivers are less than FM approved I suspect).

Lets take Blow for example here - the upgrade path to crossfire will be £1000ish (and a 5 week wait = £155 for the board and £400ea for the cards) could probably get £580 back if he sold his kit.

Or to solve the performance issues he has right now he can just buy a bew MOBO for £135 or less from a member here and get some money back by sellign his on ebay for £70ish.

Unless benching (as in being at the very top of the tree as 7800GTX SLI is no slouch and an still top of the ORB right now) is your thing, that solution will provide more than enough power to run anything at 1600*1200 8xAA 4xAF and HDR enabled, the ATI price is over £250 more expensive than nvidia for not much in return in the real world.

For me, I am waiting to see what nvidia come up with next and also to see if the 512MB cards in SLI use all 1024MB (crossfire is a 768MB Max solution right now and we do not know if all of that is used yet). I am also waiting to see what Gollum is able to achieve with his set-up.

Of course there are non-reference GTX's coming soon too and I hope the specs for the RAM will be in line with the ATI units as I feel that the performance of X1800's has a lot (but not everything) to do with the very highly clocked RAM (1500 48GB/s Vs 1200 38GB/s stock).

The point, is for the sake of a motherboard upgrade - IMHO there is not enough on offer to jump ship... yet!

For new buyers or ones that will just bench with the best of them - X1800XT and DFI crossfire is the best money can buy.

Well you could get the new motherboard and wait for GDDR4 X1800s or R580s. :)

Or the G71 (7800 ultra) with GDDR4 (the non-reference 7800GTX might have that too?) or the G80 ;)

The list goes on and on and of course there will always be choices to make.

But right now, if a guy has just spent £3000 on a rig less than 3 months old - Reading what blow has posted here, it would appear that all he needs is a new motherboard that will give him the performance he needs with what he has.

Typically I don't expect anyone with SLI to port over to Crossfire with things as they stand now.

To Gollum - sorry mate I added this to your post after hitting the edit rather than the quote button (damn you admin rights!!) corrected now though mate - sorry :o

It cant be as bad as the x1800xt's are asking atm!! lol.

Iv heard rumour there'll be a price drop on current nvidia range to accomodate the 512mb gtx at the current 256mb gtx price bracket...so £300-400 range - theyll want to hit ati where itl hurt in the price range....so long as they can supply the cards in bulk nvidia will produce and sell them (even at a tiny profit) to stop ati getting a foot hold.... they have the market lead atm to do just that ;)
