It's a nice idea, like that motherboard that could run both AMD and Intel chips.
Didnt perform great and it was a bit impractical but the idea behind it is a good one.
I think though if you can afford a dual card setup, you have the cash to be able to change the whole lot if you want to stay on top.

True mate true, these innovative ideas are seldom thought through with anything other than the budget conscious in mind hence there are usually shortcuts or other compromises. But what if.......... we can dream can't we?
I think most who have a working SLI systems will look toward performance and price - if you already have 2x7800GTX's for example, it looks right now as if there is a decent performance leap for choosing X1800XT's crossfire - but to what extent is unknow right now (relatively speaking, as tests we have seen appear to be in controlled environments and drivers are less than FM approved I suspect).
Lets take Blow for example here - the upgrade path to crossfire will be £1000ish (and a 5 week wait = £155 for the board and £400ea for the cards) could probably get £580 back if he sold his kit.
Or to solve the performance issues he has right now he can just buy a bew MOBO for £135 or less from a member here and get some money back by sellign his on ebay for £70ish.
Unless benching (as in being at the very top of the tree as 7800GTX SLI is no slouch and an still top of the ORB right now) is your thing, that solution will provide more than enough power to run anything at 1600*1200 8xAA 4xAF and HDR enabled, the ATI price is over £250 more expensive than nvidia for not much in return in the real world.
For me, I am waiting to see what nvidia come up with next and also to see if the 512MB cards in SLI use all 1024MB (crossfire is a 768MB Max solution right now and we do not know if all of that is used yet). I am also waiting to see what Gollum is able to achieve with his set-up.
Of course there are non-reference GTX's coming soon too and I hope the specs for the RAM will be in line with the ATI units as I feel that the performance of X1800's has a lot (but not everything) to do with the very highly clocked RAM (1500 48GB/s Vs 1200 38GB/s stock).
The point, is for the sake of a motherboard upgrade - IMHO there is not enough on offer to jump ship... yet!
For new buyers or ones that will just bench with the best of them - X1800XT and DFI crossfire is the best money can buy.
