7600GT Not responsive to OC

Okay, I'll just cut to the chase here :)

I have a 7600GT 256mb, and I'm using RivaTuner 2.21 to OC it. The hardware monitor in RT confirms that core and memory speeds are changing (and I get artifacting when I increase memory mhz too much, lockup with core increase), yet I see no noticeable FPS change in the Crysis benchmark utility. I even went so far as to do the pencil voltmod on this card, and I was able to get a higher stable OC, yet still no FPS increase.

Any theories as to why a card would get hotter and display the other symptoms of overclocking yet not increase my framerate? I will post specs as requested because I don't know what would apply here. Thanks all :)

Okay, well when I got this computer used the card was in it, so I didn't buy the card myself. . . I just opened the case and it just says GSE 76GT 256MB.

Athlon x2 4200+

JustPCUSA 485w, cheap obscure psu that comes with HPs

2x1gb pc3200

Some strange mobo, an HP (C51-MCP51-A8N-LA-00)

Audigy SE 2 sound card

so it is a pre-built system then, mobo is a HP with the 6100-6150 nvidia chipset.Do you have gpuz?if not the link is http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1281/TechPowerUp_GPU-Z_v0.3.0.html

If you run that we can see what the make of card you have

Nope, didn't have GPU-Z, thanks for the link :)

Well, it just says NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT, subvendor NVIDIA (10DE). .

If it makes any difference I'm using the Forceware 181.00 drivers

is that a manual o/c or the nvidia one?my 76 on my backup rig goes much higher just by using the auto clock in the old drivers. What settings are you trying to run in Crysis?maybe you have the settings too high for the card to cope

That's a manual overclock using RivaTuner - I turned it down some because I wasn't seeing any change in frames. I believe I can get about 680/850 (due to the pencil voltmod i did) but again, no change in frames!

I was just running the crysis benchmark utility to test the OC. I run it on all low, so the change in frames would be most noticeable. With the forceware drivers, and the original drivers, CoolBits wouldn't work for me. :(

what res are you running?Crysis is very hungry on both cpu and gpu,if its a low res then its your cpu that is dragging

EDIT:in fact after looking at your specs the I would say that you need to clock your cpu

Hmm, that sucks. This mobo is locked as far as OCing goes. And software cpu overclocking isn't an option, right?

Also, i just bought a PowerColor Radeon HD4870 512mb. . But if my CPU is limiting the frames, then that card won't matter, right?

All depending on the game really, but you will see an improvement but not as much as you obviously would get with a faster CPU.

Hmm. See, I was under a false impression from the start - Crysis recommends a 4400+, so I assumed a 4200+ would be close enough.

Guess that's what I get for assuming :/

Well thanks for the help guys, when I get the card up and running I'll let you know how it goes :)

you can use software for O/C,but most people advise against it,however it looks like that is your only option

Actually, under PLL Setup in ClockGen, the dropdown menu is locked to NVidia C51. I assume this means it's found my chip and I'm okay to change the speeds? Under PLL control it has read the speeds and it's changeable.
