6950 CF vs Trixx vs Afterburner

Hi guys

I have 2x radeon 6950 in Crossfire and they work fine, but if I use Trixx or Afterburner to overclock them, I get a nice blue screen.

If I use only one card, both programs work fine with high clocks, but in Crossfire if I overclock from 800mhz to 801mhz... BLUE SCREEN.

Any suggestions?

Trixx, such an annoying name.

Try overclocking the memory instead of the core. Check through your bios there isn't some silly setting you've left enabled/ disabled.

Are you applying the overclock to one card at a time or both symaltaniously? They need to be running at the same speed at the same time or won't work. Unless they are set to auto downclock when not at full use, then doesn't matter. But in game need to be matching.

Try if both cards run fine as single. If so, its probably a driver issue. If not one 6950 is most likely bad...

How about temperatures? Did you check those, cause it could be you have the top card right above the bottom one and the top one could run very hot...

Good luck!

Cheers

Stop wasting your time OCing them, flash them to HD 6970's easy utiltiy that works windows to flsh them, they have duel BIOS don' they? if it dont work flip them back. "Simples"

If you check that same forum, you'll notice that most 6950 owners are unlocking the shaders and overclocking the cards to 6970s clocks or even higher.

And that's because many cards can't handle 1375mhz of memory frequency, but some are able to rech higher.

So I want to find the maximum safest clocks. If my cards run at the 6970s clocks good, if not, I'll keep them lower.

I've tried older drivers, the most recent, nothing...

The cards are fine, the get a bit hot but that's the stock coolers fault. They can run cooler but it's worst than a hair dryer

I'll try it with the the default bios (position 2), but even if I put the memory clock at 1251 mhz I get the blue screen...

EDIT: It's not the bios... Trixx keeps doing the same error, and so does Afterburner (with unofficial overclock enabled)

you might have to disable ULPS in the registry before clocking crossfire with trixx or afterburner

or if you have the 11.2 drivers installed, you can try the new setting in CCC under 3D application settings - "Disable AMD CrossFireX power settings"

What build of Afterburner are you using?

2.1.0 Beta 7 had some changes to the overclocking modes, have you tried both settings?

To enable unofficial overclocking in this version it is necessary to:

- Set UnofficialOverclockingEULA field to the following text: I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it

- Set UnofficialOverclockingMode to 1 to keep PowerPlay active (may not work on old ASICs), 2 to traditionally disable PowerPlay or to 0 to temporary disable unofficial overclocking path

I didn't realise there was a catalyst 11.2, thanks

First I checked "Disable AMD CrossFireX power settings" and same issue;

Then I disabled UPLS... same;

Last I uninstalled Afterburner 2.0.0 and installed 2.1.0 beta 7 and IT WORKED!!!

THANK YOU

Should I keep things as they are, or it's better to uncheck "Disable AMD CrossFireX power settings"?

i'd try it without the tick so that the clock speeds drop when idle and you get lower temps...

but if it's working and you're happy then don't worry about it

Don't be too quick to assume crossfire works, it likes to trick you and mess you around
