690 vs a 780

So I've just picked up an i5 4670k and gigabyte oc board for my new build and a palit 780 but a friend who has an asus 690 which is 3/4 months old decided he wants one and has offered me a straight swop im struggling to find comparisons as most are 780 vs 680 and 7970 and Titan there doesn't seem to be 690 against these. I will say I've wanted a 690 but I wanted some other opinions, I will likely be putting this system under water.

Well, considering that 690 pulls away from the Titan quite easily in most cases it is definitely the faster card. What you need to decide is do you think it's worth it? The 690 will run much hotter and if you do want to upgrade in the future you'll just have to sell your card and buy an all new one. That might not be easy, looking at the amount (or lack of, actually) interest in GTX 590s nowadays.

If you decide to keep the 780 for now, and you want more power later on, you just throw in a second one and you're done. Although it might be a bit more expensive for you then, it might be cheaper in the long run when you sell your 690 for a minimum price and buy some other stupidly expensive card.

It's all up to you tbh, is it convenient for you personally? I must say that at this point in time it's quite a tempting deal but don't forget to think about the future.

690 owner here, the 690 may be faster...but I can tell you I want to move off it to a single solution card. When a core gets flaky its a nightmare to diagnose (and similar to raid on hard drives you are twice as likely to have a problem).

If you want easy, keep the 780, if you want to squeeze every ounce of power out of your rig now, get the 690.

I agree. I think it's better to have a single card instead of two. A lot less headaches in compatibility and such. I'd keep your 780.

The 690 is faster, but also louder, more problematic, will use more power and put out more heat.
You're the only one that can decide weather these tradeoff's are worth it to you (which if you have a 1440p or 1080p@120hz monitor, they probably are) :)

Or on the other side, if he/she is down to drop $700 in the future the 780 would be the way to go. I only say this as a 690 is not happy pushing 3x 1440p and I have no upgrade path...

-With the exception of that case I agree!

I recommend sticking with the 780, less chances of having problems, cooler, quieter, lower power consumption, 3GB Vram vs 2GB (690)

Thanks for the replies everyone , I've decided to keep the 780 and have changed my mind from haswell and got a cheap 3930k and a bit of a steal on a mobo to match!

Nice choice. You will love the 780 I know I do. I came from 2 6970's and this card totally destroys the 2 6970's. ACX cooler on the EVGA model is really nice and quiet even at 100%. You can hear for sure but nothing like the old ATI cards I had.

I would agree that you should stay with the GTX 780, Its an amazing single card and most games prefer to have one very powerful card over sli. I must admit that the 690 and 7990 did a very good job at putting two cores on one card but at the end of the day the 780 is amazing and you can always sli later on
