I want to upgrade from my FX 8350. whats best, get a 6700k now or wait for kaby lake and the 7700k or wait for zen? or spunk all my money on a broadwell-E 6800K or 6850K to "futureproof" my system. i use my system for gaming at 1440p and light 3D rendering

"shall I wait" will always get you a we really dont know what to expect answer.

The question should be do you NEED to upgrade or can YOU wait?

i could probably wait tbh. but fed up with the old girl to be frank. so kaby lake will be >10% improvement. i mean thats a number ive pulled out of my ass but thats the general curve for intel cpus right? also will DX12 ever use more than 4cores/8threads. guess thats a question no one knows the answer to again

To be fair you'll never 'futureproof' your system there is always something better coming. I don't do any rendering so I can't speak for that but if your old girl is giving you serious grief then update her. What to though?

They've just started releasing info on Skylake-E so if you go 2011-3 you may be superseded a lot quicker than you'd like.

Kaby looks like it will be sometime this year tho so it puts it within the next six months. At that close it's probably worth waiting but you'll pay a premium price for it and there may be issues with availability if you remember when Skylake dropped.

As mentioned above it depends on how badly you need to move on as to whether you bite the bullet now or wait. 6 months isn't long, Big Pascal is coming, Vega will be out as well as Zen. Fun times ahead. I'd probably wait and see.

god damn it tom. Thats probably all i needed. time to spend some money

side note - id like to see the 6850K in the GPU testing rig. maybe because thats going to be the more popular one among gamers. also then you can use the 8 and 10 core for awesome case or motherboard reviews

As tom said there will always be a waiting game when it comes to new hardware.

The amount of post I see on social media over the past 6 months with gamers asking if they should be waiting for Zen or Pascal/Polaris GPUs is astonishing.

Kaby Lake is probably a good while away,as Skylake is still less than a year old. We have barely seen any z200 boards or leaks either.

It is a matter of how much you want to upgrade now and can you justify the cost for the performance gains that you will get.

Its a funny one because my pc gets a strange workload. Most of the time its used for gaming. But when its needed it has to do 3d rendering and run simulations when i cant get everything done at work where the monster pc lives. So maybe the move to x99 is in order. Its just so damn expencive. For a mostly gaming rig

I never wait unless I know something I want is around the corner.
Way back on 94 when I got my first PC costing £1500 for what was top end back then.
I had actually waited as development was happening to the point after 16 months of waiting I realised I would never have a PC if I kept waiting for the next thing.

I went from an FX-8350 to a 6700k, and it was a worthy upgrade.

I myself chose to wait for Skylake and I'm currently waiting for the GTX 1070 to be out at reasonable prices. Whether to wait for newer (and better) stuff to be released or not is up to you.

I'm currently considering my next upgrade too. I did wonder about the "7700K" and the new Z270 chipset but information is minimal, especially regards the latter! As others have said, the tiny incremental changes we see between generations suggest that an upgrade now if you need it would be as worth while as any time.

Personally, I currently run a 2500k @ 4.6ghz and a pair of GTX 680's on a fully water cooled system. I've had the upgrade itch for a while now, and have a full build - with water cooling elements - all spec'd up. All I'm waiting on are GTX 1080's to come down in price, actually be available rather than "Pre-Order" and have a viable Water Block options - did you know that the current EK GPU Blocks (which look lovely) do NOT support the new High Bandwidth bridge? The things simply don't fit!

While the 1070 appears to offer great value, and the RX 480 even more so, for me it's more about "Performance Threshold" than "FPS per £" both the 1070 and RX 480 have the latter, but fall short of the former for my personal requirements. Well that and I want the 1080 just cos... :)

Anyway, personally I'm happy waiting. The big title I was afraid wouldn't run well on my ageing system was Fallout 4, and that's surprised me. I had been set on Skylake + 980Ti's last year, but held off when FO4 performed well with a few graphical tweaks.

In many ways, currently I'm more looking forward to doing the new build, than actually using the new build, as my current rig is still doing the business.

At the end of the day, only one person can tell you whether to upgrade or wait and that's you. For me, waiting to hear about Pascal, Polaris and Broadwell-E prior to jumping was just common sense and those techs were all imminent and potentially offered more than incremental jumps in performance. Skylake 6700K to Kaby lake 7700K however does not...but I'm always prepared to be surprised!

Scoob.
