670 zapping me

Hi everyone, my rig has 2 reference 670's in SLI. I was removing both of the cards for cleaning and while the first one came out without any trouble, the second one kept zapping/ shocking me while my hand touched the surface of its PCB while reaching for the clip that holds it to the mobo. It did not have the power cables connected to it. Also, when I got my screwdriver to take out the screws, I was zapped while loosening the screw in its socket. I had to wind up removing the power cable to my PSU to actually prevent myself from being zapped. Here's the crazy part though- I was constantly grounded. I was standing on a wooden floor and was touching my PSU every 30 seconds, yet this happened. While the card is working [installed only one], I still need to test it to see if any damage has been done, but does anyone know why this was happening? Thanks

It could be an issue with how the power is being supplied to the PSU. Are you using a surge protector or is the power cable coming straight from the wall socket?

Well it might be because you were touching the floor. Try sitting on a wooden chair and then touch the case or anything else in there and see if anything happens.

By Zapped you mean full socket power Zapped or just tiny uncomfortable zapps?

I would expect it to be static. As an engineer I have to reccomend the following (however 95%+ of people do not do atleast 1 of the following)

1. remove all power from PSU.
2. Try to turn PC on (this is to discharge the capacitors)
3. place PC on anti-static mat
4. touch sides of the case
5. wear anti static wrist band

Now most don't do all of these (myself included) but following this will reduce the risk of ESD affecting components and chances of shocking you.

Is your motherboard mounted correctly in the case? It could be shorting on the casing maybe?

As spoon said, it is always a good idea to unplug the power cable form your PSU, and press the power button on the computer to discharge any power remaining within the components before you remove/touch anything inside the computer. if the PSU is still plugged in and powered on, there can/will be power still flowing through the components which can damage components/yourself.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I am using a UPS by the way and know I was discharged as I was constantly touching the power supply. I guess I will take out the power cable the next time I do something like this and hit the power button as suggested. They were uncomfortable zaps. Thanks once again!

always remove the cable to the psu when doing stuff like that. Also after everything is off and the cable is out of the PSU, hold your power button down for a few seconds to bleed off any left-over power. If there is leftover power ur lights/fans will spin up briefly, just hold it down till everything stops.
