Hey there, my friend wants me to put a rig together for him his budget is roughly $4,000 AUD. He really took a fancy to this 2011 TRI SLI build. I'm a little hesitant recommending he go with 2011 because I thought the cost would be so much greater but it sort of works out cheaper? He really is just a gamer but "wants the best" So I'm a little torn. The price difference isn't they great between all three options. With 3570k and 4670k being essentially the same in terms of price and 4820k being the cheapest.

4820k + Rampage IV Formula = $778 ($1001 with RIVBE)

vs

4770k + Maximus VI Formula = $817 ($881 with extreme)

vs

3770k + Second hand motherboard = $385 + ??

I'll probably pair him with either SLI 780 classifieds or SLI 780 TI's Classifieds

For pure gaming 4770k + two 780ti's

For longevity and epeen none of the above, have a look at 4930k + RIVE BE + two 780ti's. The RIVE BE is overkill (superb mobo though) but you have already mentioned it above, if you are going to use it you should go for a 4930k to get the most out of it and also in a couple of years time the 6 cores/12 threads will still be going strong.

Tri SLI is literally just for epeen and benching. If you just want to enjoy your game, it will probably bring more issues with it than advantages like the need for a bigger PSU, more power draw, more heat, more noise and software issues.

For gaming, even an i7 has little advantage over an i5 at this point in time, let alone going Socket 2011 which is mainly for productivity such as editing and rendering. For this build, I'm going to agree with Kaapstad.
