4770K can't overclock to 4.2GHz @1.3V. Defective?

Kingston HyperX Beast 8GB 2400MHz
Swiftech H320

I can't get the damn thing stable at 4.2GHz. My ram was set at 1600MHz and the system would crash after 10 min running OCCT Large Data Set. Voltage was set manually at 1.3V!!! Temps were ranging from mid 70s to mid 80s with some spikes at 90-91. I seriously need some help here. This just can't be such a bad overclocker. Is there any way the CPU is defective? Intel diagnose tool passed everything at stock speeds.

Sadly mate it will either be one that doesnt overclock (very possible)

Or user error when setting it up. Im fed up with saying about our overclocking guide.

Er, everything under 'AI Tweaker' is it?
Just the overclocking side of things - multipliers, voltages etc...

Here you are:

Ignore the 1.2 Vcore I was trying all sorts of voltages. It crashed at 1.15-1.3 at every increment I tried.

Try flashing the bios, when I flashed my bios on msi-gd65 with 4770k i was able to get better overclocks.

Settings in there look okay really - might just have to say you've got unlucky with the chip.

What power supply are you running?

It appears you're running on-board graphics from there? That could be interfering with things I guess...

Please don't use drop box for images btw - you need to use a proper image hosting website such as imgur or imageshack so the pictures embed properly. Can you re-upload the images on one of those please. Thanks.

I am running dedicated graphics.
Sorry about dropbox, I was trying with imgur first but it kept giving me an error and not uploading my images. I will retry to upload them.

Try the BIOS update like akzy said (assuming you aren't already on the latest).

Any chance it could be a dodgey BIOS/board like Tom had on his review samples?

The BIOS is the latest one, I updated it as soon as I got the board. Don't know what the problem is I am going to try with the automatic overclock now.

I'm not too sure what the problem is really then.

It could just be a bad clocking chip, but to be unstable at 4.2ghz for 1.3v is so bad I would definitely be looking elsewhere for the problem.

I know there have been quite a lot of problems with the Z87 Asus lineup due to dodgey BIOSes - but the only way to really test that would be to buy or test on a different board. What country are you in? Is there a retailer where you are that offers a 14 day money back option, or something similar? Might be worth trying something like that if you can't get this sorted.

Unfortunately I am in Greece and no retailer accepts product returns unless they are definately defective. I will may try to find another board or try anything else with the BIOSes. Thank you very much for your help though

Could the DDR Voltage be the problem? My Ram is certified for 2400mhz at 1.65 so I was running it at 1600 but still 1.65v. I dropped it now to 1.5 and I am going to try. Could the VTT help somehow?

It's unlikely to be a RAM problem if you're running it at 1600mhz. It'll only need the 1.65v if you are pushing to 2133mhz/2400mhz.

I had a 4670K like this. Needed 1.265v to be stable at 4GHz. Not sure it would have been stable at 4.2GHz on 1.3v either.

If it runs the stock speed ok then it's not defective, just unlucky. Unless they sold it to you with a guaranteed overclock?

I bought a 4770K and that one clocks better, so for me it was just the CPU (if it was user error they'd both have the same issue right?).
That said the 4770K runs stupidly hot, 1.17v, custom watercooling (not the best, just a EK Supreme, MCP35X and EK CoolStream XT 240) and it will get the hottest core into the 80s during Prime95 (other cores will be in the 70s).

Think I'll end up getting a 4930K once the Rampage IV Extreme Black is out.
