Intel today unveiled the details of its first 45nm Penryn-based desktop CPU - the Core 2 Extreme QX9650. Like the current QX6850 CPU, the chip will be clocked at 3GHz, but Intel's vice president and director of digital enterprise operations, Steve Smith, claimed that 'even that outperforms the existing [QX6850] platform.'
Smith also said that Intel expects to get more out of the architecture in the future, and revealed that the chip will also have an 'aggressive' 12MB of Level 2 cache, as opposed to the 8MB of Level 2 cache on the current QX6850.
The chip will have a 1,333MHz front side bus, and has a TDP of 130W, which is much higher than the 95W quote for the standard Core 2 Quad Penryn CPUs that are slated to arrive later. As well as this, the chip will also support SSE4, which Intel claims can offer a 63 per cent performance-increase in DivX encoding when using VirtualDub.
The Core 2 Extreme QX9650 is compatible with Intel's P35 Express and X38 chipsets, and contains no fewer than 410-million transistors. The chip is scheduled to be launched on 12 November this year.
