i was wandering on your secondary IDE cable ( where your CD drive is connected )

could you connect a third HD so that you have 3 hard drives and if i did would i have to set the hard drive jumper to slave or master because its the only hard drive on the cable ( even if the cd drive is set to master )

Yes you can have a 3rd hard disk on your secondary ide cable. You will need to find out if you cd-rom is set as a master or slave though. CD drives have jumpers in exactly the same way as hard disks do, so it shouldnt be too hard to find out.

yeh thats fair enough then but if the CD drive is set to master would i have to set the hard drive to slave or master because its the only hard drive on that ide cable?

If you're running that IDE HDD as a storage drive to your main OS drive then set the HDD to slave and have the CD drive set to Master. Worked for me... ;)

It really doesnt make any difference at all.

Just make sure one is set to Master and the other is set to Slave, and they will happily work together :D

you have to set according bios

Well I reckon you probably have to set the pins on the HDD and the DVD drive first, then the BIOS pics them up from that. Plus you have to make sure the HDD and DVD-drive are both in the right position on the IDE cable. :)

it will work but dont expect it to be pretty. i have heard many stories of slow writing and seek times. a better option would be to use SATA if your board has it or buy a SATA pci card adaptor and do that. it will be quicker aswell.

The man has a point.

I've heard about very slow write times. I've also heard about lots of conflicts.

That's why I have one IDE drive only......waiting till later this year to pick up a SATA driver (hopefully a 10krpm raptor!) and then I'll have to re-install my OS...but then get very fast loading times in XP!! :D

might not have to reinstall. could copy all the files over (yes it will take ages) and then defrag, just an option if you dont wanna reinstall (i hate it)

Yeah I hate re-installing too....f***ing windows....pisses me off no end!!

Right well I'll look into that. Is that in the "files and document transfer wizard...or do I get another program to do that?

Yeah but then the things don't copy right and they say that they need oh i dunno - games and stuff won't run properley! :(

Almost all hdds have some crap that you can boot into that will allow you to copy the image of the old hdd to the new one. I did it with my WD a while ago cause reinstalling shit sucks ass. It also took me about 3000 reformats to figure out I should have a backup hdd. I've never been happier.
