3gb vs. 2gb Dual Channel

Hi guys,

I was wondering, is there a performance hinderance in getting 3gb of memory (2gb + 1gb) thats not in dual channel vs. 2x 1gb sticks in dual channel? Or does the extra gig make up for that. I am running MCE 2005. Any help would be appreciated.

Spec:

Opteron 146

DFI NF4 Ultra-D

Geil Value 1Gb PC3200 Dual Chan

With the cost of DDR2 now I'd be tempted to say get a 4GB kit and then just ignore the fact that 32bit windows won't make full use of it.

Sept that wont fit in a DFI Ultra-D ;)

Go for 2x1gb for DDR1, tbh id look towards puting that money into saving for an overall upgrade though.

How ever legendary 939 is, its a bit long in the tooth now :(

Sadly I'm still using 184 pin memory. I'm putting off upgrading till the end of the year.

Out of curiosity, how can I get (2 x 1gb sticks and 2 x 512mb) sticks to work in dual channel mode. Is it possible.

Thanks guys

I think if you pair the 1gb sticks on one channel and the 512s on the other it might work ok.

If not it will just mean you are stuck with the slowest memory speed.

RAM tends to run better when each slot has equal amounts.

2Gb would therefore run better. 3Gb may see a slight increase but it would be better running under 4Gb
