3D Is it worth it? How long until it's replaced?

Hey, (Ignore title, accidently pressed enter while writing post) was just wondering about 3D. Is it really worth it? and is anything better than nvidia's 3D kit going to come out soon?

Also what is a TN monitor like compared to the apparently clearer IPS monitor? Also are the slow response times on IPS monitors actually noticeable while playing games?

Not sure about monitors and the PC industry but in the TV industry there is an agreement to use the active shutter technology as the standard for at least 5 years so that if you buy it, you wont have an obsolete set within a year or two.

Light scenes seem to be pretty much perfect from what I've noticed, but when you've got an image with both very dark and very light scenes then you can get cross talk (ghosting).

I can't do 3D gaming with the glasses. I tried it at a kiosk and almost lost my lunch. Makes the decision easy for me! Not only that, but you lose IQ with 3D tech.

Not necessarily true.. With passive 3D you lose image quality to 540p x 2 but with stereoscopic it can still be 1080p.

Some content does look absolutely gorgeous but when the cross talk really gets going it's not so nice. Again though it really depends on the content.

I think NVideas 3D kits look impressive. 3D gaming sounds immense, you would be brought into the game more

I'm waiting for 4D (Smellivison)

The 3D is here to stay. The pron industry are using it - and as with all things in life, as soon as they're into it, it's a done deal.

OTA HD is also 1080P, but doesn't come close to a 1080P blu-ray in image quality. Resolution isn't the only determining factor in IQ. Bitrate, compression, etc. all play a part. I'm not saying that 3D can't have the same quality, but everything I've seen thus far, doesn't have the same IQ as it's 2D counterpart. This includes movies and games.

Edit: This isn't to say that what I have seen so far looks like crap, it's just not as good IQ wise.

OTA HD is generally 1080i I thought? Could be wrong though.

As for their 3D, it's not a true 1080p 3D picture... You'll only get that on a 3D BluRay which do have the same IQ.

1080i is the same resolution as 1080P

Pixel wise yes, but you said OTA HD is also 1080p and I said I thought it was 1080i... While it's the same pixel count the way it makes the image is very much different. The fact it's interlaced means that on a 1080i frame you only see half the detail of a 1080p frame during any part of a frame.

My argument still stands though. You were right on OTA HD being 1080i, but you are really arguing a part of my post that doesn't matter. Two different movies, both 1080P, can be vastly different in IQ. It's like buying a digital camera. People only care about MP. "This one is 14 MP, it must be better than this 12MP DSLR."

I would love to try 3d out for myself but from what people have said it sound like a bit of a hit and miss to me,any1 playing black ops in 3d for at least 4 hours> headache ? the technology will improve in time just to early to get my money imo!

Na, I didn't get a headache from 4 hours but after 5 or 6 my eyes appreciated me taking the glasses off. Wasn't a headache with pain or anything, but just a relief on my eyes when I took them off. Probably straining my eyes.

This was just the last session when completing it on Veteran. Was going away for the weekend so didn't want to leave it with one or two levels to go.

Ya, too soon for me to invest in 3D, I need to know it has staying power and not going to go the way of the Laser disc, HD dvd (Xbox's HD DVD player), bell bottoms, and oh ya.... 3D red/blue movies. From what I recall, the original 3D went from a big drive in theater hit (the drive in also died out quickly by the way) and future of Movies to the shame of being used on the back of breakfast cereal boxes.

Even if it sticks and works out, you know the current models of TV and Monitor are going to be the trial and error phase of the technology. I can wait till they get it perfected.

But you know how it is, just when you finely break down and drop your cash load on a new 3D TV, those damn Holographic TV's will go on sale, You just cant win with technology.
