3820 or i7 970

Hi,
I have an esxi server thats made up of
i7 970 6 core
48gb ram
p6x58d-e
10 hd's (8 in raid 10)(Its in raid 10 as need performance/redundancy rather than space)

What i'm needing to know is would I lose much performance switching to a 3820 being its only a quad core (its clocked higher though but esxi uses all cores very efficiently) as i'm replacing my gaming cpu with a 4820k and the board I bought to fit the 3820 would fit 64gb ram which would really help as i'm using all ram on the server and have to turn machines on/off all the time.
If I wouldnt lose too much in performance I could do it as my server is not as heavily hit on the cpu as it would be on other resources.

2600K was pretty much identical to the 990X when it was first released so you can pretty much work it out from there on ;)

Would the 2600k be as good even in something that uses all cores really efficiently as esxi really was built for more cores?
If so then it would mean the 3820 would be perfect for its replacement :)

2600k = 4 cores 8 threads

3820 = 4 cores 8 threads

The above are basically the same chips. I cant comment on esxi mate why would I test using that lol

I found someone on vmware forums that was using a 2700k and a 980 and the 980 was only about 10% faster so going by what you said about the 990 and 2600k then I should only be loosing about 10% :).
I can live with that.
Thank

Aye gaming wise and the benches we did there was next to nothing in it but it cost about 30% of the 990X!
