32" LCD TV as a monitor...

So my mate works for FSC and gets a big discount on everything they make. I was going to buy a decent-ish monitor for the likes of £250. He goes "Nah, I just got a 42" top of the range plasma, its amazing, just hook it up through the HDMI lead, I'll get you an LCD TV for £XXX"

Hmmmmmmmmmm me thinks. Save up a bit more and go with the LCD tv. It would be this one http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/home/products/displays/lcd_tvs/myrica_lcd_32.html

A quick read about using tv's instead of monitors (i mean quick - only one source so could easily be wrong) says the resolution of tv's is much lower than that of monitors, resulting in, well, crap picture quality.

Whay say ye?

Yup, tv's use much much lower resolutions at much bigger picture sizes which = craptastic picture quality. Decent for gaming, but day to day use is not practical or worthwhile imo.

Do you get the feeling sometimes, especially whenever you might walk around a TV showroom, that they seem to take the technology of a really good looking 19" screen and just expanded the array to fit a 30"+ ?? 1 x 1 pixel = 4 x 4 (whatever) = crappier screen.

Gaming is what i was really interested in...

By day to day use, what exactly do you mean? I basically use my PC for gaming, surfing the net, watching dvd's, downloading, tweaking/overclocking... I'm thinking about a new tv anyway so i thought it could be a nice bonus that it doubles up as a monitor...?

By day to day use I'm talking about web surfing, emailing, anything that requires you to look at the desktop for the most part. Text will be all ghettofied on the screen. Totally not worth it IMO.

Am I being dense? I have next to no idea what you mean! Pls explain a bit more

Awww... Are you sure there are no tv's with a good enough resolution?

Might leave it till after x-mas, see if anything decent comes up in the sales and just use it for games and keep my 19" monitor... Hang on, you are saying games would look good though?

Sure there are plenty, but you really need to keep it under 30". The largest single high res panel right now is 30", so bigger than that you have to just start stretching pixels.

:D So, you got an models/brands in particular I should google? Whats the damage to the wallet? £500 was my max for this, and that won't be until Dec/Jan

Thanks man

I recommend you get a nice widescreen monitor instead :) Dell 24" widescreen comes to mind, or if u can swing a bit more on the budget the 30" is definately where it's at.

I thought the 30" Dell was like £1500 or something stupid! I'll look into those monitors, cheers

I can heartily recommend a 24" Dell - great monitors and plenty big enough to watch a quick movie :D

Even the 24" is like pushing £600 - not sure its worth it...

You wouldn't say that if one were sitting on your desk right now - take it from me. Mine was worth every little penny

I have a 22" TV, a 17" CRT and a 15" TFT hooked up to my rig. I would happily trade all 3 for a 24" like kemps.

Agreed, mine was the bomb too... In fact I loved it so much I couldn't resist buying the 30" which was by far the most uber ass monitor I've ever seen and owned...

Well they're great if all you're going to do is actually watch TV :) But using them for monitors is pretty much a bad idea. I like my resolutions high and HD style :)

Edit: Crap this was my 10,000th post! YAY FOR ME :D   :boink: :boink: :cuddle: :cuddle:   :bornleet: :bornleet: :hands: :hands: :hands: :corn: :coffee: :rocker: :rocker: :rocker:
