2Gb to 4Gb of RAM question?

I have 2Gb of RAM in my rig Corsair Dominator TW2X2048-6400C3DF (3-4-3-9), and I can get my hands on 2Gb of XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400 (5-5-5-12) but my question is, will it do any good in my system or not. Latencies are different from the 2 sets and I just wonder if it worth it or not. I must say that I can get the new RAM for free so cost is not a real issue.... I am just considering the overall performance of my system!?

TIA

I would say it will be fine. JUst overclock the new ones to match the old ones.

Corsair are amazing clockers. ;)

I think you might be asking a little much to get the 5-5-5-12 timings down to 3-4-3-9 (but who knows). I'd probably settle for something like 4-4-4-10 to ensure stability on both kits.

As always though, run some benchmarks and stability tests etc to see what the best you can get is.

Thanks guys, so 4Gb at 4-4-4-10 is better than 2Gb at 3-4-3-9, the amount of RAM is more critical than the timing?

Will try to clock them with the same timing but what if somehow the 2 sets cannot have the exact same timing will it cause problem for the system, stability issue etc...?

Nope - 32bit can 'see' 4gb but all coponents take memory from the address. You need to remap memory.

E.g. If you had a GTX with 768mb(?) then you would only 'see' 3.2gb or there abouts.

I had a thread about this not too long ago, might be in the software section - vista and 4gb - or something similar. I'll try dig it up as the Scouse lad had some very good linkage (sorry, forgot user name!)

Yeah, and remapping takes time...

Thanks Mr. Smith, I found your post about vista and 4Gb in the software section... Very informative! So according to microsoft, a 32bit vista will only see 3.12Gb max on a 4Gb system!? If you want to remap the memory you need a 64bit vista... kind of sucks...

Not exactly... It's complicated.

Average is 3.2gb for a 32bit system... So if you think 1.2gb is worth whatever you are paying (in this case nothing) then do it.

I would!

I have some dominators at home just chilling. I may try it (although I think the dominators are dead - again. RMA ftw. Sigh.)

Ok my friend just gave me the 2 Gb of XMS2 and one good thing is that it is not the 5-5-5-12 but the 4-4-4-12 (TWIN2X2048-6400 C4) so I will give it a try this weekend and see what I can get with my system...

Okay just installed the additional 2Gb and so far without tweaking the BIOS etc... I only have 3.07Gb on the 4Gb available in Vista. Didn't notice any significant improvement on the system yet...

And hummm, can't find anything in my BIOS about remapping the RAM!? Any idea?

yep not much of an improvement, but I guess it does not hurt... I just wish I could find a way to remap the RAM in the Bios.

yep vista 32 here unfortunatly! well I guess as I got the RAM for free I am not going to complain 3 is always better than 2...

You'll only really see any benifit from 4gb when theres apps using lots of ram and that extra ram is needed.

Install exchange on there if you need something to gussle your ram up.
